...Relocation of the Fort Worth Alliance Airport Automated
Surface Observing System...

Starting later today, April 26, 2018, the Automated Surface
Observing System (ASOS) at Fort Worth Alliance Airport (Site ID
KAFW) will be temporarily powered off and disassembled at its
current location just off the airport property. This system will
be re-assembled at a new site on the grounds of the airport
itself, approximately 1 mile north of its current location. We
currently believe that KAFW ASOS will return to operation no later
than tomorrow (April 27). In the meantime, weather observations
will be maintained by a contract observer at the airport, and we
will continue standard Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs) for
Alliance Airport during the move.

Although the distance of the move is very short, the ground
elevation of the new site is approximately 45 feet higher than
that of its current location. While users should see few, if any,
long-term changes to most of the meteorological data being
reported at KAFW, we do expect that the elevation change should
result in a traceable increase in the average overnight
temperature data records. The current location is very near
Henrietta Creek, and as a relatively low spot, experiences
cold-air drainage at night when winds are very light. Based on
temperature observations from a second nearby site and our
understanding of microclimatology, we anticipate the future
average low temperature data to show a 1 to 2 degree increase in
the warm season and a 1 to 3 degree increase in the cool season.
High temperature data are not expected to be significantly
impacted by the move.

These very localized effects of the KAFW ASOS at its current
location are already incorporated into the forecast tools employed
by National Weather Service meteorologists and their private
sector colleagues. Once the temperature trends at the new location
become apparent, adjustments will be made to forecast tools
