Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
410 AM CDT Mon Apr 15 2024

Today:

Although there were some patches of high cloudiness, skies were clear
across much Iowa overnight. Early morning temperatures were quite mild
for mid April with readings from the middle 40s north to near 60 in a
few spots central and southeast. Winds were generally north or east at
5 to 10 mph.

Much like yesterday, mostly sunny skies can be expected into the
morning with another day of warm temperatures. Readings should be into
the upper 60s to middle 70s by late morning. There should be plenty of
sunshine during the afternoon as well with only a bit of clouds south.
Afternoon high temperatures should reach the 70s northeast and the
lower to middle 80s elsewhere.

Tonight and beyond:

The weather will change quite a bit tonight and into Tuesday however.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin moving from
the Missouri Valley into Iowa later tonight. A few storms may be
strong to severe over western Iowa with a greater potential for
severe weather over Kansas and Nebraska. Additional thunderstorms can
be expected Tuesday with that higher potential for severe weather
moving into Iowa. Large hail, damaging winds, and some tornadoes will
all be possible over Iowa Tuesday, especially central and south.

The severe weather potential will end, but some showers and a few
storms may linger into early Wednesday with additional showers likely
Thursday from central Iowa into the Missouri Valley. Cooler
temperatures can be expected to end the work week as well, with highs
in the 50s and lows in the 30s or lower 40s.
