AFTER A DRY SUMMER AND EARLY FALL, THE WEATHER PATTERN FINALLY
SHIFTED TO A WETTER ONE AS OCTOBER BEGAN. WITH THE STORM TRACK
CLOSER TO NEW ENGLAND, MORE FREQUENT STORM SYSTEMS BROUGHT WELCOME
RAINS AFTER A SUMMER DROUGHT. A TOPSY TURVY TEMPERATURE TREND ALSO
OCCURRED, WHICH IS TYPICAL OF THE FREQUENT FRONTAL SYSTEMS THAT
ACCOMPANY FALL IN NEW ENGLAND. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 74 ON THE
10TH. THE FIRST FREEZE OF THE SEASON CAME ON THE 12TH. THE MOST
SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL CAME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH WHEN TWO STORM
SYSTEMS BROUGHT DRENCHING RAINFALL. THE FIRST CAME ON THE 13TH WHEN
MORE THAN 2 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. THE SECOND WAS ON THE 16TH AND 17TH
WHEN ANOTHER 2 INCHES WAS RECORDED. CONDITIONS TURNED MORE
CONSISTENTLY COLD TOWARD THE END OF THE MONTH, WITH AUGUSTA EVEN
OBSERVING SNOWFLAKES ON A FEW DAYS.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 48.4 DEGREES WHICH WAS 0.3
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE COOLEST OCTOBER WAS IN 1974 WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 41.9 DEGREES. THE WARMEST WAS IN 2017 AT
56.2 DEGREES.

A TOTAL OF 5.69 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 1.33 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST RAIN FELL ON THE 13TH WHEN 2.41 INCHES
WAS MEASURED. THE WETTEST OCTOBER WAS IN 2005 WHEN 13.47 INCHES WAS
RECORDED. THE DRIEST WAS IN 1997 WITH ONLY 1.11 INCHES.
