AFTER A DRY SUMMER AND VERY DRY SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER BEGAN WITH A
SHIFT IN THE WEATHER PATTERN. WITH THE STORM TRACK CLOSER TO THE
AREA, MORE FREQUENT STORM SYSTEMS BROUGHT WELCOME RAINS AFTER A
SUMMER-LONG DROUGHT. A TOPSY TURVY TEMPERATURE TREND ALSO OCCURRED,
WHICH IS TYPICAL OF THE FREQUENT FRONTAL SYSTEMS THAT ACCOMPANY FALL
IN NEW ENGLAND. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 79 ON THE 10TH. THE
FIRST FREEZE OF THE SEASON CAME ON THE 18TH. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT
RAINFALL CAME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH WHEN TWO STORM SYSTEMS
BROUGHT DRENCHING RAINS. THE FIRST BROUGHT AN INCH OF RAIN ON THE
13TH. THE SECOND BROUGHT MORE THAN AN INCH ON THE 16TH AND 17TH.
CONDITIONS TURNED MORE CONSISTENTLY COLD TOWARD THE END OF THE
MONTH. MANCHESTER EVEN RECORDED ITS FIRST SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON ON
THE 30TH WHEN 2.5 INCHES ACCUMULATED.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 50.8 DEGREES WHICH WAS 1.8
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST OCTOBER WAS IN 2017 WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 59.6 DEGREES. THE COOLEST WAS 43.1 DEGREES
IN 1888.

A TOTAL OF 4.01 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 0.15 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. THIS INCLUDES A RARE 2.5 INCHES OF SNOWFALL ON THE
30TH. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE 16TH AND 17TH WHEN 1.40
INCHES WAS RECORDED. THE WETTEST OCTOBER WAS IN 2005 WHEN 12.47
INCHES FELL. THE DRIEST WAS IN 1949 WITH ONLY 0.38 INCHES.

HISTORICAL RECORDS AT MANCHESTER BEGAN IN 1885, BUT WITHIN THIS
RECORD THERE REMAIN NUMEROUS YEARS OF UNAVAILABLE DATA. DUE TO THIS,
HISTORICAL RECORDS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED INCOMPLETE AS SOME
SIGNIFICANT EXTREMES MAY BE MISSING FROM THE DATA. MORE CONSISTENT
MODERN RECORDS BEGAN IN 1998 AND CONTINUE TO THE PRESENT.
