Survey Summary:

A severe wind event impacted portions of Marion County on
Wednesday night causing damage across portions of the county.
Radar analysis of the event shows a large jump in reflectivity
aloft aligned with hail production from a rapidly strengthening
updraft in the minutes before the storm entered the county. 3D
velocity plots show this core quickly collapsing over Marion
county with clear descending reflectivity core aligned with 65-80
kt velocity measurements from KJGX several thousand ft AGL.
Despite the late hour, warm air advection kept the surface
relatively warm and moist, allowing for mixing of powerful wind
gusts to the surface as the storm core collapsed. Several areas of
winds of up to 70-80 mph impacted the southern portion of the
county.

Survey team found the most notable damage along HWY 41 in several
different locations. The first was near the intersection of HWY
41 and Harts Mill Rd. Mainly branch damage was noted to a few
trees on the western side of the HWY. The eastern side opened into
a field which had a large row of trees at the end of it near
several homes. Extensive damage occurred to these trees, with
numerous pine and oak trees uprooted or snapped at the base. One
home that was damaged had several vehicles crushed by falling
trees. This property also had numerous pine trees that had snapped
several feet above the ground. Tree damage continued down Harts
Mill Rd, with several trees in and near open fields having
suffered damage or fallen over. Damage was no longer noted about
half a mile down the road.

Further down HWY 41 to the south, extensive tree damage and wind
damage to a few homes was noted over an approximately 1.5 mile
stretch of the HWY. Damage to trees also occurred to the west of
this stretch of HWY, with damage seen starting approximately 1.5
miles down Wiggins Rd and Slaughter Rd. Of note along the HWY was
several homes which suffered roof damage as a result of the wind.
On the eastern side of the HWY, several fields lined with trees
had nearly every tree uprooted or damaged in some way. Home owners
in this area stated the wind was accompanied by a large amount of
hail, including hail up to 1" in diameter. A few homes had damage
to siding where wind driven hail had struck the home.
