Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
136 AM PDT Sat May 11 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Spring-like conditions will continue with partly to
mostly sunny skies through the weekend. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms over portions of the forecast area Monday though
temperatures will remain warm.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night. Skies are mainly clear
across northern and central Nevada this morning. For today, a
closed upper low will be stationed over northern Arizona and
southern Utah. Mostly sunny skies will be evident in northern
Nevada with partly sunny skies will develop in central Nevada. An
isolated shower or thunderstorm can`t be ruled out in White Pine
county though accumulations will be very light. High temperatures
will be in the 60s and 70s. Look for mostly clear conditions
tonight with lows in the 30s and 40s.

An upper level ridge will be moving over the region tomorrow. This
will bring mostly sunny skies to the area with highs climbing into
the 70s and 80s. Winds will be out of the northwest up to 15 mph.
The benign weather continues during the overnight with lows in the
40s.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday.

Trough energy passing through the Pacific NW on Monday will clip
northern NV, resulting in a 15-30% chance of showers and
thunderstorms to portions of NW Nevada, though most activity is
expected across northern Elko county. Any showers that develop
should produce either virga or very light rain, possibly up to a
few hundredths of an inch. The passing system will also result in
breezy northwesterly winds of 10-15mph gusting to 25mph across
most of northern NV. Showers end by early evening.

Monday night into Tuesday strong high pressure builds in over the
offshore waters of northern CA, OR and WA which will help to force
the clipping system just north of NV do dig south into NE Nevada
and Utah. Northern NV is expected to be dry and storm-free on
Tuesday, however there will be a 15-20% chance of light showers
and thunderstorms over portions of northern Nye and White Pine
counties Tuesday afternoon. Breezy northwesterly winds will be
felt across the entire CWA Tuesday afternoon with gusts of
15-25mph.

Trough energy exits NV to the SE on Wednesday, with dry conditions
and above normal temperatures expected across the CWA Wednesday
through Saturday.

&&

.AVIATION...Fairer weather today with VFR conditions dominant.
Main concerns will be north/northeasterly breezes across central
Nevada with gusts 20-25KTS at KTPH and KELY and around a 10%
probability or less for showers at KELY. Not enough confidence to
include VCSH in the TAF. Weather remains fair tonight with central
Nevada breezes easing.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across many streams, creeks,
and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to seasonal
snow melt. Temperature forecasts for the weekend and into early
next week depict spring-like temperatures with daytime highs in
the 70s and possibly the low 80s for some locales. Overnight lows
across the high elevations also likely reside warming than
freezing, further exacerbating snow melt. Given the amount of high
elevation snow pack remaining, look for runoff to increase,
causing continued elevated flows and rises for many area streams
and rivers across northern and central Nevada.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain resides in action stage and
is forecast remain in action stage for the next few days.

The Humboldt River at Comus is in action stage and is forecast to
remain in action stage for the next few days.

Wildhorse Dam Reservoir currently resides in action stage and is forecast
to remain in action stage for the next several days.
