ALTHOUGH DECEMBER ENDED WITH A LARGE SNOWSTORM, JANUARY STARTED OFF
WITH SOME RATHER MILD WEATHER. THE FIRST FOUR DAYS OF THE NEW YEAR
SAW THE TEMPERATURE CLIMB INTO THE 40S. THE NEXT FEW DAYS SAW THE
TEMPERATURE NEAR NORMAL FOR JANUARY WITH SOME LIGHT RAIN AND SNOW.
THE BIG WARM UP CAME IN THE SECOND WEEK OF THE MONTH WITH PORTLAND
WARMING ALL THE WAY TO 63 DEGREES ON JANUARY 11 WITH SOME LIGHT RAIN
FALLING THE NEXT DAY. THIS CUT THE SLOWLY DWINDLING SNOW PACK IN
HALF. SOON THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED BACK TO NORMAL AGAIN AND A PERIOD
OF SNOWY WEATHER BEGAN. ON THE 14TH, 2.5 INCHES OF SNOW FELL WITH A
HEAVIER SNOWSTORM BRINGING ANOTHER 6 INCHES ON THE 16TH. BEHIND THIS
STORM MUCH COLDER AIR MOVED INTO NEW ENGLAND. THE NEXT WEEK SAW
BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. MORE SNOW CAME ON THE 18TH AND 19TH WHEN
5.4 INCHES FELL WITH EVEN MORE COLD AIR ARRIVING BEHIND THIS STORM.
THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE WAS 4 BELOW ZERO ON THE 21ST, AND AFTER THE
FREQUENT SNOW AND COLD THE SNOW PACK HAD CLIMBED BACK UP TO 10
INCHES. BUT THE COLD ULTIMATELY DID NOT LAST. THE NEXT WEEK SAW
FREQUENTLY WARM WEATHER AGAIN WITH THE TEMPERATURE TOPPING 40
DEGREES FOR SIX STRAIGHT DAYS. HEAVY RAIN FELL ON THE NIGHT OF THE
25TH INTO THE MORNING OF THE 26TH WHEN 1.59 INCHES WAS RECORDED.
THAT WAS THE FINAL PRECIPITATION EVENT OF THE MONTH AS TEMPERATURES
REMAINED ABOVE NORMAL TO END THE FIRST MONTH OF 2020.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 29.8 DEGREES WHICH WAS 7.5
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND TIED FOR THE 4TH WARMEST ON RECORD. THE
WARMEST JANUARY ON RECORD WAS IN 2002 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
WAS 30.4 DEGREES. THE COLDEST WAS 12.1 DEGREES IN 1971. THE
FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE WARMEST JANUARYS AT PORTLAND.

A TOTAL OF 3.53 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 0.15 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION CAME ON THE 25TH AND 26TH
WHEN 1.59 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE WETTEST JANUARY WAS IN 1935 WHEN
12.29 INCHES FELL. THE DRIEST WAS IN 2004 WHEN ONLY 0.28 INCHES WAS
MEASURED.

A TOTAL OF 14.7 INCHES OF SNOW FELL WHICH WAS 4.5 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. MOST OF THE SNOW FELL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH WITH 6.0
INCHES MEASURED ON JANUARY 16. THE SNOWIEST JANUARY WAS IN 1979 WHEN
62.4 INCHES FELL. THE LEAST SNOWY WAS IN 1908 WHEN ONLY 1.6
INCHES FELL.
