DAILY RIVER AND LAKE SUMMARY
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BLACKSBURG VA
1151 AM EDT Tue May 24 2022
24 hour basin average rainfall ending 7:00 AM Tuesday was heavy
and averaged 2 to 3 inches across much of the forecast area. Local
amounts of 4-5 inches were noted along the Blue Ridge from near
Meadows of Dan southwest into the mountains of northwest North
Carolina in Ashe and Watauga counties. Small creeks and streams
in many cases were near bankful this morning and some across
southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia had risen into
flood for a few hours this morning, especially in the lower part
of the New River basin. Small creeks and streams will begin to
fall later today into Wednesday. However, main stem rivers will
likely experience minor rises over the next couple of days,
especially the New, Roanoke, and Dan river basins where some of the
heavier rain fall. While little additional rainfall is expected
tonight or Wednesday, potentially significant amounts of rainfall
return to the forecast area Friday and into the weekend. Minor to
moderate flooding will be possible on some rivers and streams headed
into the weekend as rainfall returns.
