394 FXUS64 KMAF 180815 AFDMAF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX 315 AM CDT Sun Apr 18 2021 .DISCUSSION... The upper jet stream remains positioned over West Texas and extends westward along the Mexico/U.S. border this morning creating enough instability for light showers across our CWA. A ridge over the West Coast is providing northerly flow over the Central Plains that continues to funnel cool air into Texas and eastern New Mexico keeping temps below normal through this week. Rain chances will continue for much of the Permian Basin and Big Bend through tomorrow due to lift from an upper level low sitting over Arizona, unfortunately any rainfall amounts will be light with few accumulations over a tenth of an inch. Tuesday, an upper level trough digs south along the Rocky Mountains combining with the Arizona low to bring our next cold front on Tuesday. This cold front will lack moisture so mostly clear skies will modify the post frontal airmass more than that seen from our other recent cold fronts, though still keeping us below normal. The West Coast ridge finally begins breaking down by the middle of the week creating a more progressive pattern for the U.S. causing temperatures to warm back to near normal by the end of the week. Will have to keep an eye on a trough moving across New Mexico and Texas on Friday for the possibility of additional rainfall, however at this time it appears the best moisture will remain to our east and will leave rain chances out of the forecast for now.
