Fire Weather Planning Forecast for NW Oregon and SW Washington
National Weather Service Portland OR
231 PM PDT Thu Jun 24 2021

...RECORD HEAT THIS WEEKEND...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...Strong high pressure centered over the
eastern Pacific today will gradually strengthen and migrate east
through Sunday. This will bring record-setting heat to the
interior over the weekend, with many all-time record high
temperatures likely. A very slow cooling trend begins Monday and
continues through the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION...High pressure aloft centered over the eastern Pacific
tonight will strengthen and drift east through the weekend. This
will result in extreme heat over the interior Saturday through
Monday. Many areas will likely set all-time record high
temperatures Sunday. A broad surface thermal trough is expected to
reside along and just east of the Cascades Saturday, but drift
west toward the coast Saturday night. This will induce light
offshore flow, primarily over the Cascades and North Oregon Coast
Range. At this point, do not expect the offshore flow to be strong
enough to reach Red Flag conditions. Models show the thermal
trough shifting to the Cascades Sunday afternoon, with the
possibility of some marine air seeping into the southwest portion
of the area Sunday evening.

An upper low is forecast to be located off north California coast
late Sunday and then drift north early next week. Guidance varies
on its location and ultimate track, but there is above-average
confidence that the marine layer deepens, especially over the
southwest portion. This low would also bring a more moist and
unstable south flow aloft to the area. Strengthening subsidence
inversions result in poor humidity recovery on slopes and ridges
Friday night through early next week.
