A line of strong to severe thunderstorms raced across northern Illinois into northern Indiana during the late evening hours of July 15th into the early morning hours of the 16th. Reports of trees and power lines down have been received in multiple counties. 3 brief tornadoes have been confirmed through surveys conducted by emergency management, fire officials and the NWS. Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 100 mph Path Length /statute/: 3.21 miles Path Width /maximum/: 75 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/15/2024 Start Time: 11:32 PM EDT Start Location: 2 SSW Waterford / La Porte County / IN Start Lat/Lon: 41.6426 / -86.8714 End Date: 07/15/2024 End Time: 11:38 PM EDT End Location: 2 SE Waterford / La Porte County / IN End Lat/Lon: 41.648 / -86.8099 Survey Summary: A survey of damage confirmed a that a tornado developed rapidly south of Waterford, west of N 850 W and north of Snyder Rd in LaPorte county. This tornado intensified as it moved east northeast into the Dianne Ct subdivision west of Wozniak Rd. Further intensification was noted and observed to the east between Wozniak and Forrester roads. Here a private property sustained widespread and severe tree damage with several hundred mixed hardwood and softwood trees uprooted and/or snapped on this 20 acre property. Another concentrated area of significant tree damage was noted between Forrester Rd and Tiffany Dr. Many homes and outbuildings sustained minor to moderate damage from tree fall along this track. This tornado continued east but quickly weakened and ended west of Johnson Rd as a larger scale microburst overtook the tornado. Maximum winds were estimated at 100 mph with a maximum path width of 75 yards. && .Elkhart EF1... Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 90 mph Path Length /statute/: 1.19 miles Path Width /maximum/: 250 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/16/2024 Start Time: 12:21 AM EDT Start Location: 1 S Elkhart / Elkhart County / IN Start Lat/Lon: 41.6651 / -85.9719 End Date: 07/16/2024 End Time: 12:23 AM EDT End Location: 2 SE Elkhart / Elkhart County / IN End Lat/Lon: 41.6609 / -85.9497 Survey Summary: A survey of damage confirmed a brief tornado, embedded within an area of straightline wind damage. The tornado touched down southeast of Hawthorne Elementary School and proceeded quickly ESE, eventually lifting near the intersection of Bismark Ave and S Main St. Numerous trees were uprooted, partially due to the wet ground conditions, as well as several snapped tree limbs and trunks. The greatest damage occurred in the area of Mather Ave, between Carlton Ave and Naomi St. Winds were estimated in the 85 to 90 mph range with a maximum width of 250 yards. && .Tippecanoe EF0... Rating: EF0 Estimated Peak Wind: 75 mph Path Length /statute/: 0.71 miles Path Width /maximum/: 75 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/16/2024 Start Time: 12:09 AM EDT Start Location: 2 ESE Tippecanoe / Marshall County / IN Start Lat/Lon: 41.1976 / -86.0867 End Date: 07/16/2024 End Time: 12:11 AM EDT End Location: 2 E Tippecanoe / Marshall County / IN End Lat/Lon: 41.2046 / -86.0769 Survey Summary: A survey of damage confirmed a brief tornado, embedded with a larger area of damaging winds. The tornado touched down southwest of the intersection of 19th Rd and Birch Rd, then moved northeast crossing 19th Rd before lifting in a grove of trees. Additional damage continued northeast to along Apple Road, but appeared to be from straight line winds. Damage was confined to several trees being snapped or uprooted in the area.
