Beginning May 10th, the KIWA WSR-88D radar operated by the National
Weather Service Office in Phoenix, Arizona, will be down through May
30th for the refurbishment of the pedestal. The pedestal refurbishment
project will replace all fielded antenna pedestals with factory refurbished
pedestals. We apologize for any inconvenience.

This pedestal refurbishment is part of the NEXRAD Service Life Extension
Program, a series of upgrades and replacements that will keep our nation`s
radars viable into the 2030`s. NOAA National Weather Service, the United
States Air Force, and the Federal Aviation Administration are investing
$150 million in the seven year program. Other completed upgrades in
this project include the installation of the new signal processor;
refurbishment of the pedestal, transmitter, and the equipment
shelters; and replacement of the generator, fuel tanks, and
accompanying components. This program provides technology refresh
and an overhaul of necessary subsystems to ensure the system can
perform reliably for another 20 years.

During the downtime, adjacent radars include: TPHX, KFSX, KEMX, and
KYUX. For direct access to any of these surrounding radar sites, go

The KIWA WSR-88D is part of a network of 159 operational radars. The
Radar Operations Center in Norman, Oklahoma, provides lifecycle management
and support for all WSR- 88Ds.
