...February Continued The Warm and Wet Trend Started in January...

For the second consecutive month, the panhandle was subject to
warmer than normal temperatures as well as lot of snow and rain.

At first glance, the above normal warmth may seem confusing since
many areas experienced below normal daily highs. What made the
difference and caused above normal daily averages were the overnight
lows which were generally well above what is typical in February for
SEAK. As for precipitation, many locations saw well over what is
typical. Sitka recorded 13.38 inches of total precipitation for the
month, which is slightly more than double the normal amount. Juneau
Airport recorded 7.78 inches of precip and 32.5 inches of snow. Both
figures are near double the climatic normals. Also of note for
Juneau, the city was still in a wet streak of 43 days and counting
at the end of the month. Yakutat, on the other hand, once again
missed out on normal or above normal precipitation. Regardless of
this, the region remains drought free and was categorized as only
"abnormally dry".

The root cause for the high amounts of precip was a persistent
onshore flow pattern. This type of weather regime makes
precipitation type and snow amount forecasts very difficult.
Regardless, such a pattern also sets up opportunities for not just
large amounts of snow in short periods of time but also heavy rain
events. Such was the case early in the month when a foot of snow
fell in parts of Juneau, leading to a rare snow day for the Juneau
School District on the 4th. Multiple daily rainfall records were set
during the month, the most impressive of which was Hyder on the
21st. On that day, 4.54 inches of rain and melted snow was recorded,
shattering the old single day record of 3.68 inches set in November
1942. A storm on the 10th also saw heavy rain with both Juneau and
Sitka setting new daily precipitation records of 1.60 and 2.13
inches respectively.

Many of the storms that impacted the region also featured a lot of
wind. One of the stronger storms occurred on the 20th when much of
the panhandle saw strong winds with gusts to 50 mph and high winds
(gusts 60 mph or higher) were felt in parts of Juneau. This
particular storm was also responsible for blizzard conditions along
the Klondike Highway, causing one of a few shutdowns of the road for
the month.

Toward month`s end, the low level air flow would shift more
southwesterly, sending multiple impulses of warmer air toward the
region. This would serve to raise temperatures significantly above
freezing from south to north. The last locations to finally warm
enough to change over to rain were those in northern Lynn Canal and
the interior location of Hyder where another 10 to 12 inches of snow
would fall between the 25th and 26th. The month closed out with a
final warm push behind a gale force front that would cause most
locations except the higher elevations to switch over to rain.
