Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
315 AM PDT Sat Apr 27 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Patchy fog expected early this morning in some
valleys given the recent precipitation across the area with mostly
dry weather expected today. Unsettled pattern brings low
probabilities of precipitation into the forecast beginning tonight
and thru at least mid week, primarily across northern Nevada.
Breezes will also continue across the forecast area.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

Patchy fog expected early this morning in the typical fog prone
valleys, primarily the western half of the forecast area as skies
have been clear most of the night, creating a more conducive
environment for fog formation. Further east, a few lingering light
valley rain and mountain snow showers reside along the UT/NV
state line and will dissipate by the afternoon as the most recent
weather system continues to progress east. Otherwise generally dry
weather under partly cloudy skies will be in place during the day
along with northwesterly breezes gusting 20 to 30 mph. Winds
trend lighter tonight. Daytime high temperatures will be in the
50s, with overnight lows in the mid 20s to mid 30s.

Upper energy embedded within mean northwesterly flow passes
across the forecast area late tonight and tomorrow. This is
expected to bring a modest increase in PoPs with a light valley
rain shower/mountain snow shower or two possible across the
forecast area. Little to no accumulation expected under any
activity and weather will be mostly dry otherwise. Skies remain
partly cloudy during the day, becoming mostly clear Sunday night.
Westerly breezes in place during the afternoon with gusts around
20mph. Look for daytime high temperatures in the mid 50s to mid
60s and overnight lows in the upper 20s to upper 30s.

&&

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Friday.

Monday an upper level low will approach the Silver State out of
the Pacific Northwest. Tightening pressure gradients surrounding
the upper-level low, will produce windy to gusty winds through
Monday afternoon. West to Northwest winds of 20-25 mph with gusts
30-40 mph will be possible for much of the area. Some isolated to
scattered showers may result in areas north of I-80 in northern
Elko county. Rainfall is expected to be fairly light and up to a
hundredth or two. Highs are forecasted in the upper 50s to lower
60s, with lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

A series of shortwaves move through the northern part of the state
and areas north, Tuesday and Wednesday. Each day, cooler air
filters in. Highs Tuesday are forecasted in the upper 50s to lower
60s, while highs Wednesday are forecasted in the mid 50s, with
lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s each night for much of the
area. Due to the shortwave passages both Tuesday and Wednesday,
there may be a stray shower or two across northern Nevada.
However, the current probability is less than 15%.

Thursday a ridge looks to build into the area leading to mostly
sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 60s. Lows will also be
warmer in the mid to upper 30s. Increasing high clouds may be
observed heading into Friday out ahead of the next potential
system Saturday. Friday will be warm with highs in the upper 60s
to lower 70s, and lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

&&

.AVIATION...Patchy fog is possible across portions of western and
northern NV early this morning, with a 20% chance at KWMC and
KBAM, and a 10% chance at KEKO where clouds will be a little
slower to scatter out. Dry across the region this afternoon. W-NW
winds increase during the afternoon, with gusts of 20-25kt at
most terminals, though slightly stronger gusts of 25-35kts at
KTPH.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across many streams, creeks,
and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to snow
melt and recent rainfall. Cooler temperatures are expected the
next few days, including freezing temperatures at night at higher
elevations, which will likely slow high elevation snow melt.
There will be opportunities for light rain and higher elevation
snow showers across northern Nevada through the first half of the
week but hydrologic impact should be minimal as wetting rains are
not expected.
