...Public Information Statement...

...National Heat Awareness Day is May 25th...

National Heat Awareness Day is Friday May 25th, but the National
Weather Service in Shreveport will be discussing several heat
topics and providing safety tips during the entire week of May
21st through May 25th.

North American summers are hot, and sometimes spring and fall
temperatures can reach dangerous high temperature readings.
Contrary to common perception, heat is the number one weather-
related killer in the United States. According to data from the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention, heat-related deaths
number 8,081 in the United States from 1999 to 2010. On average,
more people are killed by heat in the United States than are by
tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and lightning combined, and many
people fall victim to heat-related illnesses.

Throughout this week, special public information statements will
be issued each day, as indicated by the following list. Newspapers
and safety organizations can help to promote awareness, by
printing and distributing the heat safety tips. The broadcast
media can also help to get this information to the public.

Monday... Heat Safety at Work and at Play
Tuesday... What is a Heat Wave
Wednesday... Practice Heat Safety Wherever You Are
Thursday... Vehicle Heat Related Deaths are Preventable
Friday... Know the symptoms of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
