Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Juneau AK
506 AM AKDT Tue Apr 16 2024

.SHORT TERM.../ through Tuesday night / Another quiet day for
Southeast Alaska. High pressure over the gulf and Northwest
Canada has pushed out nearly all the clouds. An area of marine
stratus is over western half of the Gulf of Alaska and kind of
spreading into the north central portion. With sunny skies during
the day and highs reaching to tho upper 40s and 50s, sea breezes
could develop in the afternoon. Very few changes to the forecast
were made for this mornings package.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Monday/...AK Gulf 500 mb high
pressure ridge will have shifted to the east as a low drops down
over the far western AK Gulf. This pattern will remain until the
weekend when the blocking ridge may break down allowing the mid
level trough to track over the area. At the surface dry weather with
clear skies continue until at least Saturday before the front
associated with a surface low over the Western Gulf may track in.
Ensemble blends and operational models don`t have a solid signal on
the timing but keep the general pattern shift. Warm day times highs,
5 to as much as 10 degrees above normal for the middle of April, and
cool nights with diurnal temperature ranges of 20 degrees or more
last until the end of the week due to the clear skies. While the
front will be mainly offshore later in the week with near small
craft winds and building seas over the eastern gulf the pressure
gradient will orient with increase inner channel winds to 15 to 20
kt.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will continue with a slight chance of
some patchy fog development over the southern part of the
panhandle. Under the influence of a building ridge in the gulf,
any fog should be more short lived than the previous night and
less prevalent due to a trend towards drier conditions. No wind
concerns during the TAF period.
