Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be possible today and tonight. The primary hazards will be gusty winds, cloud to surface lightning strikes, and locally heavy rainfall. The Weather Prediction Center placed South Florida and the Keys in a Slight Risk (15-40% chance) for Excessive Rainfall today and tonight. There is a slight chance for strong to severe thunderstorms today and tonight due to adequate deep layer shear and instability. These storms will be capable of damaging wind gusts. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday. A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for all Florida Keys and surrounding waters and a Hurricane Watch is in effect for the deep Gulf zones, including the Dry Tortugas. Hurricane Milton is expected to emerge out of the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, accelerating eastward then northeastward across the Gulf of Mexico over the next few days, making landfall on the Florida Peninsula Wednesday evening. However, there remains uncertainty regarding Milton`s track, timing, size, and intensity as it passes by to our north. Regardless, the Keys will feel some impacts from Milton`s passage. Expect winds to ramp up considerably late Tuesday, peaking early Wednesday. The Weather Prediction Center placed South Florida and the Keys in a Slight Risk (15-40% chance) for Excessive Rainfall through early Wednesday. Rainfall totals for will range between 5 to 10 inches with isolated 15 inches. Milton is expected to be a sizable storm by the time it nears the Florida Peninsula. Early estimates of 1 to 3 feet of coastal flooding is forecast for our our gulf and bay side coasts, exacerbating the already high seasonal tides. As a result, a Coastal Flood Watch is now in effect. In addition, due to being within Milton`s right front quadrant, there will be a slight chance for strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday through early Wednesday due to adequate deep layer shear and instability. Heavy squalls continue to move east at near 20 knots across the nearshore and offshore waters of the Florida Keys. The strongest cells are capable of gusts 30 knots or greater, blinding downpours, and occasional cloud to surface lightning strikes. HAZARD...Wind gusts 30 knots or greater. SOURCE...National Weather Service Meteorologist. IMPACT...Expect wind gusts in excess of 30 knots, suddenly higher waves, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Boaters should seek safe harbor now, and remain there until threatening weather has passed. Prepare for thunderstorms with wind gusts near 30 knots, locally rough and confused seas, occasional lightning strikes, and potentially blinding downpours. Get to a safe port as quickly, and as safely as possible. When downpours reduce visibility, slow down. Prepare for rainfall rates up to 0.5 to 1 inches per hour.
