Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening. The main hazard from any thunderstorm that develops will be cloud-to-ground lightning, although a few storms could become strong to severe and produce damaging wind gusts. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday. Another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms is expected on Tuesday. Some of these storms could become severe and produce damaging winds and hail. In addition, a tropical system is expected to strengthen over the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday and will likely impact our area towards the end of the week. SOUTHEASTERN AVERY AND NORTH CENTRAL BURKE COUNTIES THROUGH 700 PM EDT... At 613 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 8 miles southeast of Newland, near the segment of the Blue Ridge Parkway between Linville Falls and Grandfather, moving east at 15 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Edgemont, Globe, Collettsville, Upton, Linville, Jonas Ridge, and Pineola, and a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway between Linville Falls and Grandfather Mountain. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding.
