Also, scattered strong thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon
and this evening. Localized damaging winds and flash flooding are
main concerns with these storms.

...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT NORTHWESTERN BROOME...
SOUTHEASTERN CORTLAND...EASTERN TIOGA AND WEST CENTRAL CHENANGO
COUNTIES THROUGH 1215 PM EDT...

At 1138 AM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Marathon to near Newark Valley to Owego.
Movement was southeast at 15 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
         unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is
         possible.

Locations impacted include...
Vestal, Johnson City, Endicott, Maine, Owego, Nanticoke, Newark
Valley, Whitney Point, Marathon, and Lapeer.

This includes the following highway exits...
 New York Interstate 81 between 7 and 9.
 Interstate 86/Route 17 between 64 and 70 South.

THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Heat index values of 100 to 104 expected.

* WHERE...A portion of central New York.

* WHEN...From noon today to 8 PM EDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat
  illnesses.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.
