Flood Advisory National Weather Service Juneau AK 251 PM AKST Tue Dec 3 2024 AKZ325-040800- /O.NEW.PAJK.FA.Y.0020.241203T2351Z-241204T0800Z/ /00000.N.RS.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.OO/ City and Borough of Juneau AK- 251 PM AKST Tue Dec 3 2024 ...FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM AKST THIS EVENING... * WHAT...Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt is expected. * WHERE...Montana Creek near Areas Around The Low Water Crossing On Montana Creek Road And Near Back Loop Road At The Montana Creek Bridge. * WHEN...Until 1100 PM AKST Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 248 PM AKST, river gauge reports indicate rises in water levels from an area of heavy rainfall across the advisory area. Rapid snowmelt is also occurring and will combine with rain to cause minor flooding. This will cause minor flooding from overflow of poor drainage areas, especially near Montana Creek. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are possible. - For Montana Creek at Back Loop Bridge: At 2:00pm the stage was 14.5 feet. Flood Stage is 14.5 feet. Forecast: A crest around 14.6 feet is expected around 9:00pm Tuesday. Impacts: At 14.5 feet: Water begins flowing over the low water crossing on Montana Creek Road. Bankfull conditions at the gauge with water starting to inundate adjacent undeveloped fields along Mendenhall Loop Road. At 15.5 feet: Up to one half foot of water will flow over the low water crossing on Montana Creek Road after the community gardens. Water will approach and begin to inundate yards of residences along the Northwest side of Mendenhall Loop Road. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... This includes the cities of Gustavus, Juneau, Petersburg, Kake, Port Alexander, Wrangell, And Hyder. * WHEN...Until 11 PM AKST this evening. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff from rainfall and snowmelt may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, other low-lying areas and flood-prone locations. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain. Flooding may occur in poor drainage areas. Heavy rain falling on the existing snowpack will lead to increased runoff. Ponding of water may occur where storm drains or culverts are blocked by ice and snow. Rain falling on the hard pack snow will lead to icy conditions. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Rainfall amounts since the change over from snow have been 1 to 3 inches for Juneau, Gustavus, and Kake, upwards of 3 inches in Petersburg and Wrangell, and lesser amounts so far in Hyder. New rainfall amounts of 1 to 1.5 inches expected through Tuesday evening. - Storm drains should be kept clear of debris and snow as much as possible. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Do not enter or cross flowing water or water of unknown depth. Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become unstable and unsafe.
