Readings of -20F have been observed early this morning, and are expected to continue through 8 AM. Please dress in layers and limit your time outdoors as much as possible this morning! Frostbite can develop in less than 30 minutes in these conditions. High fire danger is likely across the San Luis Valley today, due to gusty southwest winds and low relative humidity values. Please avoid activities that could start a fire! A few days worth of beneficial snowfall begins over the San Juans, La Garitas, and eastern Sawatch Mountains this afternoon and this evening, spreading eastward across the high country throughout the overnight hours. Snowfall rates pick up dramatically after sunset, leading to heavy blowing snow and dangerous travel conditions across our mountains. Wolf Creek Pass in particular will likely be difficult to impossible tonight into tomorrow morning due to heavy blowing snow. Winds could gust in excess of 65 mph at times over mountain passes. Please use extreme caution if you must travel through the high country tonight, and be sure to prepare an emergency kit! .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday Heavy wind driven snow will continue across the mountains through Saturday with the heaviest snow falling across the eastern San Juan through Friday. Total snowfall amounts by Saturday evening will range from 1 to 2 feet across the southwest mountains with locally higher amounts across the southwest and west facing slopes. Around a foot of snow will be possible across the higher elevations of the Sawatch range, La Garita mountains, and crest of the Sangre De Cristo mountains. Between 4 and 10 inches will fall across the lower elevations of the western and central mountains as well as the west facing slopes and passes of the Sangre De Cristo mountains. Blowing and drifting snow will create poor visibilities and dangerous travel conditions, especially Friday. Damaging wind gusts up to 65 mph will be possible across the southern I-25 corridor from Colorado City south to near Raton Pass late Friday night through Saturday afternoon. This will lead to hazardous conditions for high profile vehicles. Light snow will be possible off and on across the southeast plains Saturday night through Sunday night. Up to an inch or two of accumulation will be possible. The next storm system may bring more cold and light snow to the region Tuesday and Wednesday. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT... Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be likely over portions of the region. $$ EHR/31
