Wind chills fall into the 35 below to 50 below zero degree range tonight. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 PM for portions of northern Minnesota and an Extreme Cold Warning goes into effect at 6 PM for the entire Northland. These wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Lake-effect snow will bring a dusting up to an inch or two of accumulation to northeast Douglas, northern Bayfield, and northern Iron counties through early Sunday morning. Roads may become slippery in those areas including US-2 and WI-13. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday Dangerous wind chills persist through Tuesday morning. Extreme Cold Warnings continue until noon Tuesday. Lake-effect snow showers will continue along the South Shore. For the Extreme Cold Warning, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 44 below zero expected. * WHERE...Crow Wing, Northern Aitkin, South Aitkin, Koochiching, North Cass, North Itasca, South Cass, South Itasca, Carlton and South St. Louis, Central St. Louis, North St. Louis, and Northern Cook and Lake Counties. This includes the Tribal Lands of the Fond du Lac Band, the Mille Lacs Band, East Lake and, Big Sandy Lake areas and the Bois Forte Band, Nett Lake, Lake Vermilion and, Deer Creek areas. Recreation spots such as Voyageurs National Park. The entire Boundary Waters is also included. * WHEN...For the Cold Weather Advisory, until 6 PM CST this evening. For the Extreme Cold Warning, from 6 PM this evening to noon CST Tuesday. * IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 45 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The coldest wind chill values will occur from late evening through late morning each day Saturday through Tuesday. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates. In extremely cold conditions, battery power drops. Gasoline and diesel vehicles take more battery power to start, and electric vehicle driving range is reduced. Your vehicle may struggle to start in these conditions, especially if it is stored outdoors. For electric vehicles, range may be drastically reduced in these extreme conditions.
