The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a Code Red Air Quality Action Day for Fine Particulates, until midnight EDT Thursday night. An Air Quality Action day for Particulate Matter has been declared for Wednesday, June 7th and Thursday, June 8th. Sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors. Levels of fine particulates will rise into unhealthy for sensitive groups category statewide today and Thursday and likely last into the evening hours both days due to wildfire smoke transport from eastern Canadian wildfires. In Addition, ozone is forecast to reach the moderate category on Wednesday as sunny skies, light winds, and warm temperatures are forecast for the Garden State. An Air Quality Advisory means that air quality within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards. For more information on current and forecast concentrations of ground-level ozone and fine particulates, visit www.airnow.gov or www.state.nj.us/dep/airmon/ or call the New Jersey Bureau of Air Monitoring at 609-292-0138 $$

A combination of low relative humidity, breezy west to northwest winds, and dry fine fuels will lead to an elevated risk for fire spread with any potential fire ignitions today. Minimum relative humidity values this afternoon will range from 20-25% across the area. West to northwest winds will increase to around 10-15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph possible. Fuel moistures are very low, with much of the region having not experienced a widespread wetting rainfall in over 5 weeks. Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread fire quickly.
