Unseasonably cold temperatures spreading into central U.S.

A strong cold front will usher a much colder air mass into the central and eastern U.S. for the end of the work week. Temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees below average in some areas. Rain and snow will be possible across the Great Lakes on Friday as the system crosses the area. Heavy snow is possible in the central Appalachians Friday night.

  • SynopsisWEAK ONSHORE FLOW EARLY THIS MORNING WILL BECOME MODERATE NORTHEAST LATER THIS MORNING AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS INTO THE REGION BEHIND A COLD FRONT. NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO MODERATE TO STRONG TONIGHT OVER THE GULF WATERS AS HIGH PRESSURE CONTINUES TO PUSH INTO THE REGION. ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE THIS MORNING MAINLY SOUTH OF PORT ARANSAS AS THE FRONT MOVES THROUGH. THEN CONDITIONS WILL DRY OUT THIS AFTERNOON BEHIND THE FRONT. THE FLOW WILL GRADUALLY TURN ONSHORE BY LATE SATURDAY. ONSHORE FLOW WILL INCREASE ON SUNDAY. RAIN CHANCES WILL RESUME OVER THE WATERS ON MONDAY IN ADVANCE OF THE NEXT INCOMING SYSTEM. MODERATE TO POSSIBLY STRONG ONSHORE FLOW WILL OCCUR MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY AS THE SYSTEM APPROACHES.
