Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Wakefield VA
1150 AM EDT Tue Mar 21 2017

This morning`s scheduled tornado drill failed at NWS Wakefield, due
to previously unknown software issue with geographical shapefiles in
our operational system. This mapping error caused the generation of
the tornado warning text product to fail. Without the associated
Tornado Warning text product, NOAA Weather Radio, and the Emergency
Alert System (EAS) were not activated for Central and
Eastern VA.

The tornado drill was successful at all other NWS offices serving
the Commonwealth of Virginia. Thus, the tornado drill will not be re-
scheduled for tomorrow.

We realize that many localities in the area served by NWS Wakefield
activate their drill activities in association with the receipt of
the tornado drill, Test Tornado Warning, product through NOAA
Weather Radio and/or EAS. We apologize for the inconvenience the
failure this morning created. We are also aware that some
localities, schools, etc. followed through with their tornado drill
even without receipt of the tornado drill. For those that did not
conduct their tornado drill today, we strongly encourage you to
conduct your drill as soon as possible.

The mapping error causing the Tornado Warning Drill message to fail
has been identified and is being corrected. Questions about today`s
Tornado Drill can be directed to:
