Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Huntsville AL
550 AM CDT Tue Sep 17 2024

...New AVIATION...

.NEAR TERM...
(Today)
Issued at 158 AM CDT Tue Sep 17 2024

The main headline for the next several hours will be fog. Current
satellite and surface observations show mostly clear skies with
1-3 degree dewpoint depressions. The clear conditions will support
additional radiational cooling allowing temps to drop a few more
degrees. Even with lower dewpoints in NW AL, temperatures are
forecast to be within 0-1 degrees of their dew point. The low dew
point depressions and light winds along with lingering moisture
from weekend rainfall will be incredibly supportive for fog
during the early morning hours. We will be monitoring conditions
closely should a Dense Fog Advisory be needed.

Any fog that does form will likely dissipate a few hours after
sunrise as winds gradually pick up from the north. Today, we will
find ourself right at the intersection of high pressure to the
west and low pressure to the east as a tropical low over the
Carolina`s pushes inland. The high pressure will support clear and
dry conditions in NW AL with high temps in the high 80s. NE AL and
southern middle TN will see slightly different conditions. The
very western extent of the tropical low will be present over NE AL
and support more cloud cover and very low (5-10%) rain chances.
This, in turn, will limit high temps to the mid 80s.

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Friday)
Issued at 157 AM CDT Tue Sep 17 2024

The overall pattern will remain mostly unchanged through the short
term forecast. The tropical low will begin to push back towards
the Atlantic and maintain our high pressure influence both aloft
and at the surface. This will support clear and dry conditions
each day. A gradually warming trend will take place through the
remainder of the week with temps rising into the low 90s by
Friday.

The clear and calm conditions paired with the saturated grounds
from recent rainfall will support a fog concern for the next
several nights. Conditions will be monitored each night should a
Dense Fog Advisory be warranted.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through Monday)
Issued at 157 AM CDT Tue Sep 17 2024

High pressure will remain the dominating feature through the long
term forecast. Mid level ridging will build in from the SW and
remain through the weekend. While the overall trend will be clear
and dry conditions with temps in the high 80s to low 90s, we will
be monitoring any impacts from an upper low tracking east across
the CONUS. Being on the eastern periphery of high pressure will
place us in a NW flow regime marking a favorable pattern for SE
expansion of clouds and rain from the parent low. While the
current forecast is dry, we will be monitoring how these two
features interact (NW flow from high pressure and low pushing
east) over the next several days for any forecast changes.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 550 AM CDT Tue Sep 17 2024

Light winds and mostly clear skies will support VFR conditions
through the day today. Late tonight after 6Z winds will calm and
visibility reductions from fog is likely. Subsequent issuances of
the TAFs will refine timing and intensity of fog.
