Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
1239 AM PDT Fri May 31 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Warming trend continues over the forecast area today. A couple of
disturbances pass through Nevada this weekend and early next
week, leading to periods breezy conditions and a moderation in the
warming trend. Showers across Northern Nevada cannot be ruled out
on Monday associated with the unsettled upper air pattern.
Afternoon highs are forecast to rise in earnest by the middle to
end of next week as high pressure builds over the Intermountain
West.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Friday and Saturday.

Blended model guidance continues to advertise afternoon highs
trending upwards several degrees from yesterday. Highs will
generally range from the mid 70s to mid 80s for today. Not much in
the way of precip potential today either, with only build ups
forming over the higher elevations of the forecast area as a
feeble impulse generates modest lift this afternoon.

Another disturbance will reach the Silver State by Saturday.
Afternoon highs again trend upwards a more few degrees from
Friday, with highs in the upper 70s to upper 80s forecast. Impacts
from this disturbance will be mainly limited to an uptick in
winds out of the west. By the late afternoon, westerly wind gusts
in the 25-30 mph range will be conceivable. Perhaps an isolated
high elevation shower or two will accompany this disturbance in
Elko or White Pine County by the late morning to early afternoon
hours. Any rouge shower on Saturday afternoon is forecast to end
during the evening as meager instability wanes.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Thursday.

Models continue to show a shortwave trough over the western
United States. This feature will move over the area for the Sunday
timeframe with a mix of clouds and sun. West to northwest winds
will be breezy during the afternoon with gusts of 25 to 30 mph.
Highs will be a little cooler with readings in the 70s and 80s.
Skies will be partly cloudy with lows in the 40s and 50s for the
night period.

An upper trough is expected to move into the northeast Pacific
early Monday morning and will push across northern British
Columbia, Canada during the day. The forecast area will be at the
southernmost tip and light isolated to scattered showers are
expected mainly north of I-80. Winds will be breezy to locally
windy with west to northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts to 40
mph. Highs Monday will be in the 70s and 80s with lows in the 40s
and 50s.

Look for quiet weather returning Tuesday through Thursday as
models are continuing to suggest an upper ridge building over the
southwestern United States. This will keep a lid on chances for
precipitation but temperatures are expected to soar to well above
normal levels. Highs in the 80s to near 90s on Tuesday, with 80s
and 90s on both Wednesday and Thursday. Overnight lows will dip
into the 40s and 50s.
