Our recent wet week was the result of a combination of an expansive high pressure in the western North Atlantic and a stalled frontal boundary draped across Northern Florida. This setup drew deep tropical moisture into our area from the western Caribbean. The pattern persisted June 11-15th, which kept the enhanced moisture trapped across South Florida and the Florida Keys and brought bouts of heavy rainfall to the region. While not as impressive as the totals seen across South Florida, this multi-day rainfall event did produce periods of extreme rainfall for portions of the island chain. The highest daily totals observed were on June 12th and most of the rainfall occurred within the span of just a few hours. In the Lower Keys, the highest reports were over the eastern islands with 12 to 16 inches on Summerland Key and widespread 8 to 12 inches on Big Pine Key. A CoCoRaHS observation from E Shore Drive on Summerland reported the highest rainfall amount for the 11th-15th, totaling 15.99 inches. In the Middle Keys, the highest report was 7.35 inches on 62nd Street Ocean. The Florida Keys Marathon Airport ended the wet stretch with a total of 5.79 inches, including 3.85 inches on the 12th. This daily reading set a new record that was more than 4 times the previous record of 0.92 inches, set in 1955 and 1967. The highest totals observed in the Upper Keys were around 12 inches, with the highest report (11.90 inches on Shoreland Drive in Key Largo) even being an underrepresentation due to an overflowing rain gauge at the time of observation on June 13th.
