778 FXAK69 PAFG 241014 AFDAFG Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 214 AM AKDT Tue Sep 24 2024 .SYNOPSIS...An upper low will continue to produce numerous snow showers in the Brooks Range through Tuesday. An arctic trough remaining in place over the west coast, will keep the Interior cool and cloudy with a chance of precip through Thursday. .DISCUSSION... Upper Levels and Analysis...Troughing will persist over the State through mid week keeping the Interior cool and cloudy along with shortwaves moving northward across the Interior that will enhance rain/snow shower activity through Wednesday. An upper low will develop in the western Bering Sea late Wednesday into Thursday then track south and move across the Aleutians Friday into Saturday. Weak ridging and southerly flow will develop over the Interior next weekend. A strong upper low will move into the Gulf from the south late Sunday into Monday. Central and Eastern Interior... Troughing aloft will keep the Interior cool and on the cloudy side through mid week. Weak shortwaves will propagate to the north producing spotty rain/snow showers through Wednesday. Snow level around 2000 feet. Light amounts of accumulations expected at these levels. Most of the shower activity will be confined to the Alaska Range and north and east of Fairbanks. Highs in the mid to upper 40s through Wednesday. Highs in the 30s over higher terrain. Lows in the mid 20s to mid 30s. West Coast and Western Interior... The pressure gradient remains tight over the west coast and will continue to see gusty northeastly winds through the Bering Strait and over the coast around 15 to 30 mph. Upper low dropping down over the area on Monday will bring some showers to the W Interior and inland areas on Monday and Tuesday. Highs in the low 40s over much the coast through Thursday. North Slope and Brooks Range... Snow showers will continue over the Brooks Range today. Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches is possible with the continued snow shower activity. Shower activity will diminish some on Wednesday. The north slope will continue to see areas of stratus and Fog. Highs in the upper 30s near the coast and colder in the Brooks Range. Extended Forecast Days 4-7... An Upper low is progged to remain over the west coast through Thursday, while the Interior remains cloudy and cool with the threat of Showers through at least Thursday. An upper level low develops over the western Bering Sea late Wednesday into Thursday and tracks to the south on Friday then moves along the Aleutians Friday into Saturday, while weak ridging builds over the Interior. Further out towards the end of the run, the models are showing a strong system that moves into the Gulf of Alaska Sunday into Monday of next week, but there is still differences in intensity and track of the low.
