In 2006, a line of intense thunderstorms developed across eastern Colorado and progressed into northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska during the afternoon hours. The storms produced 3 tornadoes, flooding and intense outflow winds of 70 to 90 mph. Significant tree and power line damage occurred across the region, with numerous reports of damaged or overturned agricultural irrigation systems. One brief tornado damaged a few businesses just west of Highway 27 and north of Interstate 70 in the city of Goodland. A metal frame door was ripped off its hinges and flung 150 feet across the highway, while a large dumpster was rolled 150 yards into a field. In 2011, wind gusts estimated at 90 mph resulted in damage north of Stratton, Colorado. A grain bin, barn and an unoccupied trailer home were severely damaged in addition to several vehicles and light poles. West of Kirk, Colorado, a building under construction was blown down by strong winds estimated near 85 mph. $$
