In 1926, the temperature at Yellowstone National Park plunged to 9 degrees below zero. It was the coldest reading on record in the month of September for the 48 contiguous United States. In 1989, record cold spread from the Rockies to the Appalachians as 47 cities set record low temperatures for the date.
