Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
200 PM PDT Tue Sep 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Continued cool and wet conditions remain for the next
several days as fall-like weather settles over northern and
central Nevada. By the end of the week, fairer weather is expected
with temperatures returning to near average.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night. The forecast area
has been influenced by upper level low pressure that is now
exiting the area to the northeast. In its place will be a very
short reprieve of dry conditions through early Wednesday with
another upper level trough moving into the area during the
afternoon. The track of the upper low will follow a more southern
trajectory with the best chances for accumulating precipitation in
central Nevada. Overnight lows will be in the upper 30s to mid
40s with highs on Wednesday in the 50s and 60s.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday.

A trough of low pressure and cold front will bring showers and
thunderstorms along with breezy winds Thursday through Friday
afternoon. Storm total amounts will range from 0.10 to 0.25 inch
of rain in central NV. Highs will cool into upper 50s to lower 60s
with lows in the mid 30s under mostly cloudy skies. As the trough
exits the region, a zonal flow pattern and dry weather returns
for the weekend and into early next week. Highs will warm into the
upper 60s to upper 70s with lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s.

&&

.AVIATION...Showers and thunderstorms expected today for portions
of northern and central NV in the wake of a low pressure system
exiting region. There is a 15% chance of thunderstorms today at
KEKO with gusty outflow winds to 50 mph possible. Otherwise, VFR
conditions will prevail with CIG/VIS reduction to MVFR at times
from passing rain showers. Thunderstorms expected to diminish
later this evening with isolated showers lingering over portions
of northern NV, including KWMC and KBAM tonight.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Look for a wet air mass to reside over the area
through the next several days with brief breaks here and there.
Shower and thunderstorm activity will continue for all zones
through Wednesday with higher coverage percentages of showers and
thunderstorms for the central Nevada zones, though zones in the
north will remain moist. Relative humidity values will be high for
this time of year with good recovery during the overnight.
