Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Medford OR

...Updated AVIATION discussion for 12Z TAFs...

.DISCUSSION...Adjustments were made to the sky cover to this
evening and tonight to better match the latest visible image.
Adjustments were also made to the weather to confine the haze and
patchy smoke to northeast Lake County as the current smoke models
suggest this is where patchy smoke and haze will be at. The rest
of the forecast is still on track.

Dry weather will continue into Wednesday morning with afternoon
temperatures peaking out to well above normal values Tuesday for
the interior westside valleys as the thermal trough moves inland.
Meanwhile weak onshore flow will result in cooler afternoon
temperatures at Brookings. Speaking of which, offshore flow is
still keeping Brookings toasty with a temperature of 89 degrees
as of this writing. Pretty impressive for this time of the year
and at this time in the evening. Cooling is likely on Wednesday as
a weak front approaches the coast. -Petrucelli

.AVIATION...24/12Z TAFS...Stable atmospheric conditions will
continue to bring VFR levels to inland areas of northern California
and southern Oregon, with no change expected through the TAF period.

Along the Oregon coast, easterly winds are preventing marine stratus
from developing. Visibilities are down to MVFR levels at North Bend,
but should be cleared out late this morning. Current guidance
suggests westerly flow this evening, which is expected to bring
marine stratus over North Bend. -TAD

.MARINE...Updated 800 PM Monday, September 23, 2024...The thermal
trough will gradually expand northward tonight, then weaken Tuesday
morning. Steep seas will persist through tonight, then conditions
will improve with weakening winds as the day progresses on Tuesday.
Conditions hazardous to small craft are expected through Tuesday
morning for areas south of Bandon.

Seas will transition to swell dominated Tuesday as the upper level
pattern transitions and multiple swell trains pass through the area
waters during the week. In general, these northwest swell trains
will range from 7 to 9 ft at 12 to 14 seconds, possibly reaching up
to 10 to 11 ft on Friday. A front will pass through the area on
Wednesday and again on Friday. These fronts will weaken as they
approach the region, limiting the concern for strong south winds
ahead of the fronts. Some light precipitation will be possible, with
the best chances being north of Cape Blanco and with the Wednesday
front. /BR-y
