In 1953, the worst tornado in the history of New England tore across Massachusetts. The massive F4, which some believe may have been an F5, had a track 46 miles long, averaged three quarters of a mile wide, lasted 1 hour and 24 minutes and obliterated nearly everything in its path. Hardest hit was Worcester where, 40 miles west of Boston, the tornado reached 1 mile wide. In all, 90 were killed of which 60 were in Worcester. There were 1,288 injuries and around $52 million damage; the 2002 equivalent of about $350 million. Debris from the tornado landed in Boston and adjacent areas of the Atlantic. At the time, it was the costliest tornado in United States history. && In 1984, one of three tornado outbreaks to strike the former Soviet Union rampaged across much of far Western Russia. A total of 11 tornadoes occurred during the outbreak of which 2 were violent. The most violent, and deadliest, was an F5 that raced nearly 100 miles from 15 miles south of Ivanovo (located about 160 miles east of Moscow) to Lunevo. Reaching one half mile wide, the tornado killed 92. (Some reports indicate 95 fatalities.) Around 130 were injured. Several large buildings were reportedly swept away. Numerous vehicles and other heavy objects were thrown. The most astonishing was a crane weighing 355 tons that was thrown 220 yards. Asphalt was scoured from a highway near Ivanovo. The 2nd violent tornado was an F4 with a track 18.5 miles long from Kostroma to Lyubim. There were no fatalities but numerous large trees were uprooted and thrown long distances and a crane, weighing 350 tons, was knocked over. Around 400 were killed and 213 injured in the outbreak. In 2019, lightning struck & killed a motorcyclist as he was riding southbound on I-95 just north of Daytona Beach Florida. The lightning struck the cyclist`s helmet; causing it to shatter. The cyclist and the motorcycle were thrown about 50 feet. The man died at the scene. $$ Auto
