504 FXUS66 KSGX 011056 AFDSGX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 356 AM PDT Mon Jul 1 2024 .SYNOPSIS... Hot conditions are expected into next week for inland areas. A long-duration heat wave likely for the deserts with the heat peaking on Friday and Saturday for most areas. Night and morning coastal low clouds will spread into portions of the western valleys late each night with the marine layer moderating the heat near the coast. && .DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE... SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES... .SHORT TERM (Today through Wednesday)... A trough of low pressure moving inland to the north will bring slightly stronger onshore flow today with inland areas a few degrees cooler than Sunday, but still around 5 degrees above average. There is an eddy over the coastal waters early this morning with coastal low clouds extending inland across most of the Orange County coastal plain and inland into far western portions of the San Diego County valleys. A warming trend will begin on Tuesday and continue into Friday and Saturday. A long- duration heat wave for inland areas is expected to begin around Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and continue through much of next week. Night and morning coastal low clouds will spread into portions of the western valleys late each night. && .LONG TERM (Thursday through Sunday)... The warming trend will continue on Thursday with the heat peaking around Friday and Saturday with well above average high temperatures continuing for inland areas into next week. High temperatures for the lower deserts will be around 120 for Friday and Saturday, for the Apple and Lucerne Valleys 106 to 112, and for the Inland Empire in the upper 90s to around 110. NBM has high temperatures for Palm Springs at 116 or higher from Wednesday of this week through Thursday of next week with a peak of 122 on Friday and 121 on Saturday. Palm Springs has a 59 percent chance of tying or breaking the existing high temperature record on Friday of 120 and a 66 percent chance of tying or breaking the existing high temperature record of 119 on Saturday. && .AVIATION... 010900Z...Coast/Valleys...Low clouds increasing in coverage at this hour will spread up to 15 miles inland by 14Z. Bases will be 700- 1100 ft MSL with tops to 1500 ft MSL, with CIG impacts at coastal TAF sites through 16Z. Local VIS 1-3 miles in fog expected on higher coastal terrain through 16Z. Expect clearing to the coast 15Z-17Z. Low clouds will spread inland earlier this evening, with CIG impacts beginning 03Z-06Z Tue at coastal TAF sites and slightly higher bases. Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear skies with unrestricted VIS will continue through this evening. Local west winds with gusts 25-35 kt will return after 23Z, on the desert slopes and through San Gorgonio Pass. && .MARINE... No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Friday. && .BEACHES... A long-period swell of 2-3 feet from 190 degrees with a period of 16- 18 seconds will arrive at SoCal beaches as early as Wednesday morning, peak Friday and gradually subside next Sunday. This may lead to elevated surf with breaking wave heights of 6-7 feet, mainly on exposed south and southwest-facing beaches in Orange County. Rip and longshore current risks will be high the second half of this week. && .SKYWARN... Skywarn activation is not requested.
