.DISCUSSION...Rest of today through Saturday...
RH values this afternoon are currently in the teens across
portions of our higher elevations and mountain valleys, with much
higher values observed across the lower elevations behind this
morning`s cool front. Expecting some high-based showers/weak
thunderstorms to develop over portions of the higher elevations
this afternoon and move eastward off the terrain. Generally
thinking things would produce more gusty winds than precipitation,
therefore can`t rule out some dry lightning to be associated with
some of these.
After receiving a fuel status update from some of
our fire partners this morning, have gone ahead and issued a Red
Flag Warning for portions of the plains for Saturday where RH is
expected to drop into the low teens coinciding with wind gusts up
to 40 mph.
LONG TERM DISCUSSION...Saturday night through Wednesday...
Fire weather conditions will improve Saturday evening as RH
values climb above critical thresholds by 1800-1900.
Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are expected through
at least Wednesday as near-record to record-breaking temperatures
and mostly dry conditions are expected, with the exception of a
quick reprieve for Monday when RH values are not expected to drop
low enough for critical fire weather conditions for any locations
where fuels are deemed critical.
We are looking at RH values dropping into the single-digits
Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with temps in the 90s and winds
gusting between 30-40 mph across a large portion of the lower
elevations. Sunday looks to be the most marginal day for critical
fire weather concerns at this point, but we are still expecting
some pockets of elevated to critical fire weather conditions
developing in the afternoon. By Tuesday and Wednesday, we are
expecting widespread critical fire weather conditions to develop
across the lower elevations as multiple days of drying under the
hot temps will quickly dry out any greenup that is covering drier
fuels below that are receptive and ready to carry fire.
Additionally, the HDWI has as approaching the 95th percentile for
these days as well. We do anticipate more fire weather highlights
being issued in the coming forecast packages. Of note, while fuels
in our mountain valley zones are not at critical, this hot and dry
spell could begin a transition towards moving in that direction.
We would welcome any fuel status updates when changing conditions
are observed so we can add any of those zones into highlights if
