Denver/Boulder Aviation Discussion
Issued at 1118 UTC Thursday, December 4, 2025
.AVIATION /12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday/...
Issued at 418 AM MST Thu Dec 4 2025
Rare fog event has unfolded at KDEN with visibility less than
1/4SM with southwest winds and no Denver cyclone! RVRs are down
to around 1000-1500 ft. We don`t see much change til at least
13Z-14Z per satellite imagery, although there is some slow erosion
now noted from the southwest. Whatever the case, the fog is
literally creeping at this time so we`ll keep things down til 14Z
and then show some improvement. Short term models like the HRRR
were showing significant improvement by 15Z, but considering the
slow motion it could easily be an hour in either direction
(14Z-16Z).
KAPA should stay clear, while KBJC not entirely in the clear as
fog lurks just to the east (so about a 20-30% chance of impact
there).
Regarding winds, light southwest flow is expected til about 18Z.
Then wind direction signals become mixed. Usually with snow on the
ground we end up with an afternoon wind out of the southeast, but
pressure gradients would suggest west/northwest. For now, we`ll
just go with VRB since wind speeds should remain less than 8 kts
and low confidence in any one direction prevailing. Light drainage
winds from the south/southwest will resume rather quickly by 01Z
Friday. VFR conditions will persist once the stratus/fog threat
end.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 437 AM MST Thu Dec 4 2025
So far MVFR cigs at some of the TAF sites have been the biggest
impacts overnight with minimal reports of fog. The lower cigs
are likely to stick around through at least mid morning before
clinging mainly to the high peaks. So VFR and light winds should
dominate the afternoon and evening forecast. Another system
arrives to the north late this evening and will spread ILS cigs
to some sites during the early morning hours. KHDN is the most
likely terminal to be impacted by snow in the predawn hours.
Snow will favor the higher peaks of the northern Colorado
mountains but widespread terrain obscuration from cloud across
the central and northern mountain is expected well into Friday
and beyond.

Salt Lake City Aviation Discussion
Issued at 1031 UTC Thursday, December 4, 2025
.AVIATION...Low clouds have mostly dissipated early this
morning, with clearing skies expected through the day before CIGs
drop once again after ~01-03z with the next storm system, resulting
in mountain obscuration and MVFR CIGs, particularly after 06z. Winds
will be light and variable through roughly 15-16z when southerly
winds around 5-10kts will pick up. These southerlies could persist
through the day (25% chance), though northwesterly winds will likely
return anytime between 20-23z.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Expect light and variable winds
through the morning, with westerly winds with gusts up to 25kts
expected to persist after ~18z. SCT-BKN low clouds over and adjacent
to higher terrain will begin to dissipate after roughly 15z, and may
produce periods of MVFR CIGs until then. CIGs will dip again across
northern/central UT and southwest WY later this evening.

East of the Divide...KCOD/KCPR/KLND/KRIW/KWRL Terminals
FEW-BKN FL150-200 will occur at times this morning with periods of
SKC through the afternoon, before increasing to BKN-OVC
FL060-100 from north to south after 00Z. LLWS will remain in
place over KCOD through 17Z, with wind gusts around 30kt. These
winds will then increase up to 40kt through 01Z, 45kt through
08Z, then 35kt through 11Z. Wind gusts around 30kt will also
continue at KCPR through 01Z, with sustained winds around 15kt
afterward. Gusts around 25kt will reach KRIW by 18Z and last
through the afternoon. Winds will be light (10kt or less) at
KLND and KWRL. Snow is not expected through the period.
West of the Divide...KBPI/KJAC/KPNA/KRKS Terminals
KJAC will have marginal MVFR conditions through the first few hours
of the start of the forecast. MVFR ceilings are widespread across
western portions of the forecast area this morning, with LIFR
ceilings over southern Lincoln County. The MVFR conditions and
mountain obscurations will remain in place through the day, with
snow developing over far northwestern portions through the
afternoon. VCSH will be possible in the Jackson Valley by 22Z with a
30% chance for snow at KJAC. Snow will be likely by 01Z, with LIFR
vis, and continue through the rest of the period. Snow will be
in the vicinity at KBPI/KPNA after 07Z, with KPNA having the
better chances to be impacted by the snow and MVFR conditions.
KRKS will be impacted with wind gusts of 20 to 30kt through the
TAF period, with VFR conditions.
Please see the Aviation Weather Center and/or CWSU ZDV and ZLC for
the latest information on smoke, icing, and turbulence forecasts.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 435 AM MST Thu Dec 4 2025
Lingering low stratus in the southern Nebraska panhandle will likely
dissipate by mid-morning. Main aviation concern today will be strong
gusty winds at southeast Wyoming terminals. West winds with gusts
over 30 kts will be possible throughout the day. Strong winds will
continue overnight. Clouds will also build in overnight as snow
moves into the mountains out west. Overall, VFR conditions are
expected at most terminals for the majority of the TAF period.

Issued at 549 AM CST Thu Dec 4 2025
Lingering low stratus and patchy fog will shift east, leaving
both terminals with VFR conditions from mid-morning through the
end of the forecast period.
Satellite imagery shows the back edge of the low cloud cover
stretching from roughly a VTN to SNY line. This will continue to
push east with quick improvement in CIGs at the majority of area
terminals. Concern then focuses on gusty southwest winds this
afternoon, turning more westerly with the passage of a surface
trough. Only high level clouds are expected this afternoon and
potential for anything promoting less than VFR conditions
overnight appears quite low.

Stratus and localized freezing fog/drizzle; with the freezing
fog/drizzle over the GLD terminal is forecast to continue.
Current thinking is that the freezing fog/drizzle at GLD should
end as drier air moves in from the northwest which should be to
the terminal around 13Z or so as some visibility improvements
have been seen upstream. Confidence isn`t the highest in this as
GLD has been the lowest visibility wise for the night even with
a southwest wind. Ceilings for each terminal are forecast to
improve through the morning. As soon as the stratus breaks and
mixing ensues breezy winds gusting around 25 knots is forecast
until the late afternoon/early evening as winds remain from the
souht-southwest.

Visible satellite imagery and surface observations at 16z
depicted widespread IFR stratus persisting across SW KS. The
stratus will erode through this afternoon, but it will take a
while with the weak sun angle, with VFR/SKC expected to return
to all airports by around 21z Thu. SW winds of 10-15 kts will
prevail this afternoon. Excellent flying weather is expected
tonight and Friday with VFR, scattered mid/high clouds, and
light winds.

(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 414 AM CST Thu Dec 4 2025
A winter weather system continues to impact the panhandles this
morning. This is causing a low level cloud deck of LIFR or worse
conditions at all terminals. KGUY has seen some transient holes
within this deck but these do not signal any improved conditions
at this time. This low level cloud deck will remain in place until
around noon when it will most likely lift and break up. During
the lifting and breaking up phase MVFR conditions can be expected
for all terminals. Then in the afternoon conditions improve to VFR
as the cloud deck dissipates. For KAMA during the mid morning
hours there is a low to moderate chance for light to moderate snow
showers that can cause MVFR to IFR reduced visibilities.
Otherwise winds will be be mainly weak from the SW through today.

Snow showers in central and eastern NM will taper off by 15Z. MVFR
to IFR cigs are present across most of central and eastern NM as
of 12Z. Low cigs will be more persistent in eastern NM, while
they are more intermittent in central and northern areas. Freezing
fog has begun to develop east of the central mountain chain and
will likely expand in coverage the next few hours before
diminishing after sunrise. Low clouds and fog will clear from west
to east through the morning, with clearing likely by around 21Z.
There is a moderate chance that IFR cigs develop near the
northwest high terrain tonight, with a low chance (10-20%) that
these cigs push into KFMN.
