Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
248 PM CDT Fri Oct 3 2025

The Fire Weather Planning Forecast is updated by 9am
and by 4pm. For the latest forecast information, please
use the Hourly Weather Graph Forecasts at weather.gov/desmoines

.DISCUSSION...

The rest of today will feature warm conditions with winds slightly
breezy at 10 to 15 mph over western Iowa. Relative humidity(RH)
will bottom out in the middle 30 percents to low 40 percents in
most areas with full sunshine.

Saturday will feature elevated fire weather concerns in cropland
as windy conditions develop along with another warm and sunny
day. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will be common over western and
parts of northern Iowa with a few gusts over 40 mph possible in
these areas. With deep mixing, have lowered dewpoints into the
middle 50s, which results in minimum RHs in the 30 to 40% range in
most areas with a few spots likely dropping into the upper 20
percents. Care should be exercised with any farm or outdoor
equipment to avoid creating sparks with any fire in farmland
having the potential to spread quickly and keep fire departments
busy. Grasslands in most areas of our service area are greener
resulting in a much lower risk of uncontrolled fire spread. With a
Red Flag Warning being based on grasslands, this setup does not
warrant this warning.

Sunday will have winds not quite as strong and temperatures will
be slightly lower so while there may be elevated fire weather in
cropland again, it will be a bit more muted. A cold front will
move through the state late in the day into the night bringing
chances for showers and thunderstorms into early next week along
with more seasonal conditions.
