611 FXUS63 KGID 201746 AFDGID Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hastings NE 1246 PM CDT Sun Sep 20 2026 ...AVIATION UPDATE... .KEY MESSAGES... - Cooler today with highs in the 60s to low 70s. - Scattered showers possible through the afternoon hours, with another round of showers possible north of I-80 overnight. - Seasonably cool weather persists through the school week with highs in the 60s to low 70s. Off and on precipitation chances continue each day. && .UPDATE... Issued at 131 AM CDT Sun Sep 20 2026 Scattered showers/storms will move into west/southwestern portions of the area early this morning. Aloft a trough is centered over the Rockies with weakly zonal-northwesterly flow over the eastern U.S. Showers/storms will lift east/northeast across the area during the day, with rain coming to an end over NE portions of the area by the late afternoon hours. Widespread stratus and rain will help to keep the day seasonably cool. Highs in the 60s are expected across most of the area, with temperatures in the low 70s across southwestern portions of the area where some sunshine is possible. A weakening cluster of storms that develops over western NE/Eastern CO may sneak into far western portions of the area this evening before dissipating. Given the anticipated weakening trend, storms are expected to fall below strong/severe strength by the time they reach western portions of the area. Overnight, scattered showers along the NE/SD border may sink into far northern portions of the area (along/N of Highway 92) though any accumulations would be light. Troughing persists over the area on Monday with low stratus locked in place over central/northern portions of the area. Under the stratus highs will be confined to the 60s. Southern/southwestern portions of the area could see more sunshine, allowing temperatures to climb into the mid 70s. A few showers may linger across the area throughout the day, but most areas look to remain dry. Otherwise seasonable-seasonably cool weather persists throughout the school week with highs generally in the 60s and 70s. Passing disturbances will bring off and on chances for showers/storms through the end of the forecast period with the most widespread chances Wednesday night- Thursday. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 236 PM CDT Sat Sep 19 2026 A line of showers and thunderstorms has developed across western portions of the area this afternoon. These showers and thunderstorms are expected to rapidly weaken and dissipate as they track eastward through early evening hours with a more robust line of showers and thunderstorms eventually developing to our southeast later this afternoon along yesterdays cold front. In general, the 18Z HRRR seems to have caught on to this initial line of showers and thunderstorms stretching from Dawson in to Furnas counties, and largely updated the pops for the next few hours to reflect this. Later tonight, expect a cluster of showers and thunderstorms developing across the Rockies to move into the plains, bringing a better shot for some more widespread shower and thunderstorm activity overnight. Given limited instability and shear, this cluster should be weakening as it crosses the local area, but cannot completely rule out a stronger thunderstorm across our west initially, especially across areas west of Highway 183. Further east, thunderstorm coverage will diminish and only light rainfall accumulations are anticipated by Sunday morning. After a seasonable day this afternoon, expect temperatures to be on the cooler side of climo Sunday afternoon, which will mark the start of a prolonged period of seasonal to seasonably cool temperatures across the region. At the same time, the flow aloft will fluctuate between westerly and southwesterly, which should allow multiple upper level disturbances to cross the local area through the period - bringing off and on chances for unsettled weather across the central plains. It certainly will not rain or storm across the entire area every day, but expect at least a chance for precipitation across the local area with each passing disturbance. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z MONDAY/... Issued at 1227 PM CDT Sun Sep 20 2026 For KGRI/KEAR Airports: MVFR or lower stratus will prevail at both terminals through the period with generally light northwestelry winds less than 10 KTS. Expect some improvement in CIGS to near 1.5K feet over the next few hours, with all indications that they will lower again overnight to around 500 FT along with some light BR. While there could be a few light showers mixed in, the odds for this are so low that no mention was made in 18Z TAFS. In addition, contemplated lower VSBYs overnight as there are some hints in HRRR for dense fog as well as in LAMP and NAM guidance towards daybreak Monday, but want to see additional forecast data come in along these lines before biting. Overall, light northeasterly flow and near zero dewpoint depressions are favorable for at least more widespread fog development. && .GID WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... NE...None.
