Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
311 PM PDT Fri Jun 21 2024

...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ACROSS INTERIOR TODAY,
BECOMING BRIEF CRITICAL ON SATURDAY DUE TO HOT, DRY, AND LOCALLY
BREEZY CONDITIONS...

...LONG DURATION HEAT AND MODERATELY DRY CONDITIONS THIS
WEEKEND INTO MUCH OF NEXT WEEK...

...SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY
FOR AREAS SOUTH OF POINT CONCEPTION...

.DISCUSSION...
Mountain, interior valleys, and deserts will remain dry and
breezy today. Southwest to northwest wind gusts will peak between 20
and 35 mph this afternoon and evening with minimum humidities generally
between 10 and 20 percent. The flow will shift to the southeast and
south on Saturday, with gusts between 20 and 35 mph across the interior,
strongest in the mountains of LA and Ventura counties, as well as the
Antelope Valley.

High pressure will build once again this weekend. Hot and dry conditions
will return with the potential of a long duration event lasting through
much of next week. High temperatures between 96 and 107 will be common from
the warmest coastal valleys to the interior areas. Breezy winds from typical
diurnal directions will form each day. Sundowner and I-5 Corridor winds
will likely start again Tuesday and increase each day through next week, with
gusts reaching 40 mph by Thursday. Minimum humidities over the mountains and
interior areas between 8 and 15 percent will be common Saturday. The combination
of hot, dry, and locally breezy conditions will bring elevated fire
weather conditions today across the interior, becoming brief critical on Saturday
when there is a better overlap of gusty winds and very low humidity(especially in the
mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties and Antelope Valley). With ample
dead fuels and dried grasses, the risk for large grass fires will remain elevated
through at least Saturday. Humidity levels are expected to rise with the incoming
tropical moisture Sunday into Monday.

This moisture, from the remnants of former Tropical Storm Alberto, will bring a
10-20 percent chance of thunderstorms to areas south of Point Conception
Saturday night into Sunday, then falling to less than 10 percent by Monday.
With the lowest levels of the atmosphere still fairly dry on Saturday night,
any thunderstorms that do form will most likely have limited rainfall which
could trigger a fire ignition and generate gusty downdraft winds. As the
atmosphere moistens on Sunday, there will be a low but present risk for
brief heavy downpours, especially in the mountains.
