.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 357 AM EDT Thu Aug 28 2025

Rainfall associated with the cold front that passed over us
yesterday has allowed patchy dense fog to form in spots across Upper
Michigan early this morning, as can be seen by observation plots
over the area and webcams. In addition, satellite imagery shows a
low-level stratus deck moving in from Lake Superior and developing
southwards across the U.P. behind the cold front early this morning,
allowing Upper Michigan to remain insulated from the cold air
advection occurring over the area. Thus, we can expect low
temperatures this morning to only drop down into the upper 40s to
mid 50s across the area.

As we move into the daytime today, expect high pressure ridging
building into the area to bring mostly sunny skies to the U.P.,
although there may be some lake-effect clouds that form over the
north central and east. While winds may be a little breezy (up to 20
mph) from the north and northeast this morning and early this
afternoon, expect winds to begin calming down as we head into the
late afternoon hours via the high pressure overhead. Nevertheless,
the breezy winds over Lake Superior early today will bring dangerous
waves and rip currents to the beaches of Marquette and Alger
counties today into this evening (as well as most of the other
beaches along the Lake Superior shoreline today too). Because of
this, a Beach Hazard Statement has been issued for the dangerous
swimming conditions for Marquette and Alger counties today; swimmers
should avoid the water for their own safety as rip currents and high
period waves could quickly tire out even experienced swimmers.

With clear skies and calm winds expected tonight across the area,
expect temperatures to tank, with some spots in the interior west
potentially getting down to 30 degrees or even lower late. While we
may see some patchy fog develop over these spots as temperatures
lower to the dewpoint, expect patches to areas of frost to develop,
with the highest confidence in this occurring over the inland areas
of Iron, Baraga, and southern Houghton counties, and to a slightly
lesser extent Ontonagon and Gogebic counties. Therefore, a Frost
Advisory has been issued for these counties for late tonight to
early Friday morning. The advisory may need to be extended eastward
into Marquette and Dickinson counties in the future if temperatures
trend colder than currently expected. However, that will depend on
patchy fog development late tonight and radiational cooling working
in conjunction with the cooler airmass overhead.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Issued at 357 AM EDT Thu Aug 28 2025

A slightly warmer airmass looks to settle into the area after
today/tonight where the 60s on Friday increase to low to mid 70s
Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows, save for Thursday night, will
largely fall into the 40s interior and 50s lakeside.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 123 PM EDT Thu Aug 28 2025

Expect VFR conditions to dominate the terminals through the forecast
period as high pressure builds in. That being said, some patchy fog
or even lake-effect cloud cover could develop over SAW late tonight
into early Friday, potentially dropping conditions down to LIFR or
even airport mins.

Due to the high pressure building in today and tonight, expect the
gusty winds this afternoon to die-off by the early evening, becoming
calm to near calm at the sfc tonight.

.MARINE...
Issued at 357 AM EDT Thu Aug 28 2025

Behind a cold front that moved through yesterday, winds have now
shifted to the northeast at around 20 knots early this morning.
However, with ridging moving in today and remaining through the rest
of the weekend, expect calmer winds of 20 knots or less by this
afternoon; the calm winds look to remain across the lake into next
Tuesday.
