Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
238 AM PDT Wed Mar 27 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Dry, warmer and breezy conditions today will
transition to more active weather beginning tonight as the next
weather disturbance and cold front move into the region. A mix of
rain, snow and graupel along with gusty winds are expected much
of Thursday across central and northern Nevada. Another low
pressure system is expected to pivot from just off the California
Coast through the desert Southwest Friday through Sunday night
bringing more precipitation to the area for the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday night.

A dry and warmer day is expected across much of the state as a
transient ridge takes hold over the region. Winds will be gusty
from the southwest in the 20-25 mph range, closer to 30 mph gusts
this afternoon across Humboldt county. The gusty winds are a
signal for another weather change coming up for late tonight into
Thursday. A cold front will begin to move into northwest Nevada
late tonight bringing a line of rain and snow showers that will
move southeast through the state Thursday morning through Thursday
night. Snow levels will remain high until late tonight where snow
levels will drop to valley floors across areas in north central
and northwestern Nevada. However, precipitation intensity will
essentially ended so not much in the way of snow accumulation is
expected across northern Nevada except in northern Nevada
mountains where several inches are expected above 6500 feet.

High temperatures today in the 50s and 60s falling into the upper
40s to 50s Thursday. With increasing cloud cover tonight, low
temperatures will remain elevated in the mid 30s for most valleys,
dropping back down into the 20s Thursday night.

.LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday

Friday through Sunday. Isolated rain/snow showers are expected to
continue Friday and through the weekend as the low pressure
system begins to move eastward through the southwestern U.S..
Confidence on the position of the system is low on whether it
moves northward or stays south, however the probability of more
showers remain the same with either outcome. Temperature ranges
remain the same, showing very little changes with highs in the 40s
to 50s all three days, and lows in the 20s to 30s. The
temperatures would make the precipitation fall as rain with higher
passes and summits having snow. Breezy winds at 10-15 mph
expected each afternoon.

Monday through Wednesday. Monday, the low pressure system heads
eastward across the U.S. with models showing high confidence that
a strong upper level ridge moves in, giving drier and clearer
conditions. Temperatures expected to rise with Monday highs still
in the 40s to 50s and reach into the 60s by Wednesday. Lows will
also gradually warm but stay in the upper 20s to 30s. Breezy winds
in the afternoon at 10-15 mph.

&&

.AVIATION...Winds will increase today from the southwest at
10-15kts gusting 20-25kt ahead of the next weather disturbance.
Increasing mid and upper-level cloud cover will move over the
region through today. Showers return to northwest Nevada this
evening, though precipitation is not expected to reach KWMC or
KBAM before 06Z.
