886 FXUS65 KLKN 070803 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 103 AM PDT Tue May 7 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Look for colder temperatures and gusty winds across the area today with isolated to scattered showers in the north. are in the forecast Tuesday. For Wednesday through the rest of the week, temperatures are expected to warm into the 70s by the weekend with dry conditions. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night. Light rain and snow showers are being seen moving across mainly northern Nevada this morning. Light amounts of less than 0.10 inches are being reported by remote observation platforms. Models are showing light scattered showers continuing across areas mainly north of the US Highway 50 corridor for this afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible with a strike or two along the border with Idaho. Winds will be out of the northwest and gusty especially on the lee-side of mountains. Speeds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph are expected, though some locally strong wind gusts to 50 mph are possible. High temperatures will be on the chilly side with readings in the 40s and 50s. Isolated showers will remain across northern Elko county tonight with overnight low temperatures in the 20s. For Wednesday and Wednesday night, the flow will remain northerly through this period as a closed low pressure system spins over the Midwestern United States with upper ridging along the west coast states. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected in northern Nevada with partly to mostly sunny skies over central Nevada. Afternoon highs will remain below normal with readings in the 50s and 60s. Winds will once again be breezy with gusts of 30 to 35 mph in the afternoon. By Wednesday night, clouds will scatter out over much of the area with lows in the 20s and 30s. .LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday Low pressure trough draped across the Four Corners region into the North-Central Plains will promote a gusty northeast wind across much of northern and central Nevada but otherwise quiet weather across the area. There is a slight chance for hit amd miss shower activity but it`s less than 10% statewide. Quiet weather will persist with warming temperatures Friday through the weekend across the area. Temperatures will warm well into the 70s and lower 80s by Sunday with warm temperatures continuing through early next week. Lows will warm similarly with lows by early next week only dropping into the 40s and 50s. A weak low pressure area across the desert southwest may bring a few showers and isolated thunderstorms to the area Monday and Tuesday afternoon but significant precipitation is not expected. Gusty outflow winds will be the main concern for these high-based showers Monday and Tuesday. && .AVIATION...A cold front will bring VCSH, -SHRA, and -SHSN to northern terminals KWMC, KBAM, and KEKO respectively from 09Z to 11Z this morning, and lasting through most of the morning. VCSH including a mix of snow and graupel showers at KEKO is likely to last thru the afternoon. Showers dissipate this evening. MVFR conditions are forecast at times and brief periods of IFR may be possible under stronger showers. Central Nevada terminals KTPH and KELY are expected to remain dry. Breezy winds Tuesday with W-NW gusts 20-25 knots or higher at all terminals. KWMC remains AMD NOT SKED due to a communications issue. && .HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across several streams, creeks, and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to seasonal snow melt. Modest increases have been noted in faster responding creeks and streams due to recent rainfall and snowfall. Increased flows may additionally be noted on other streams and rivers over the next several days. However, cool temperatures through the first half of the week will continue to help mitigate high elevation snow melt and subsequent runoff. The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain resides in action stage and is forecast remain in action stage for the next several days. The Humboldt River at Comus resides in minor flood stage and is forecast to remain in minor flood stage for the next few days while gradually decreasing. The river is forecast to fall into action stage mid week. Wildhorse Dam currently resides in action stage and is forecast to remain in action stage for the next several days. The Owyhee River near Mountain City resides near action stage. The river is forecast to continue to range in and out of action stage for the next several days. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
