Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
106 PM PDT Sat Apr 20 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Spring-like conditions will continue through the early
portions of next week. Cooler weather with a return to light
showers will commence later Tuesday into the mid-week portion.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night. Skies are sunny to
mostly sunny across the area this afternoon. There is a line of
clearing noted to the west, which will continue removing east
through the period. Winds will diminish tonight with overnight
lows in the 30s and 40s.

For tomorrow, a flat ridge will remain over the forecast area
through the period. The weather will be remain quiet through the
day with some gusts to 25 mph possible. Expect high temperatures
in the low to mid 70s. Dry and benign weather will continue
during the overnight with lows in the 30s and 40s.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Saturday night

Warm and dry conditions with partly cloudy skies will continue
into Monday with as a ridge axis will be over the region. Highs
will range from the 60s across northern Elko county to upper 70s
across northern Nye county. A few convective clouds are expected
across the higher terrain of central Nevada Monday afternoon but
with a dry sub cloud-layer in place little rain will reach the
ground. Probability of any measurable rainfall Monday remains
below 10%. However, virga could bring some gusty winds to the
area.

A transition to a more active weather pattern begins on Tuesday
as a trough approaches the U.S. West Coast. A subtle short wave
disturbance embedded within broad southwest flow aloft ahead of
the main trough axis along with low-level convergence along a
developing deformation axis will provide some forcing to generate
a few showers and thunderstorms across mainly northeastern Nevada
Tuesday afternoon. Again, not much rainfall is expected with
chances of measurable rainfall less than 30%. Winds across central
Nevada will be elevated from the southwest.

For Wednesday, additional Pacific moisture will allow for more
widespread showers and thunderstorms along an axis from around
northwestern Nye county into much of northern and northeastern
Nevada. Chances of wetting rains are higher in this area reaching
up to 0.20" in some locales but snow levels will remain quite high
so snow will not be an issue in terms of impacts. With additional
cloud cover and moisture Wednesday will bring temperatures down a
bit with highs reaching into the 60s with lows holding steady int
eh upper 30s to lower 40s.

An active wave pattern bringing cooler temperatures and
additional, potentially considerable, rain and mountain snow to
the state is expected for the latter part of the week. Timing and
areal coverage of precipitation is expected to change in the
coming days but the overall pattern suggests a pretty busy pattern
to continue into next weekend.

&&

.AVIATION...Dry with VFR conditions at all terminals over the
next 24 hours. Occasional mid and high clouds are expected. West-
northwest winds of up to 10 knots at all TAF sites today, before
light drainage winds return tonight.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Many streams, creeks, and rivers across northern and
central Nevada continue to observe elevated flows. Mostly dry
conditions are expected through the weekend and into early next
week, however temperatures also continue trend warmer which will
help to accelerate the melting of mid and high elevation snowpack.

The Bruneau River is currently just below action stage, but may
rise to action stage in the coming days.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain is currently in action
stage and expected to slowly recede over the coming days.

The Owyhee River near Wildhorse is currently in action stage and
expected to gradually rise in the coming days, forecast to
reach minor flood stage in the Wednesday timeframe.

The Owyhee River near Mountain City is expected to remain in
action stage for the next several days with a forecast rising to
minor flood stage next week.

Wildhorse Dam is currently in action stage and is expected to
gradually rise, but remain below minor flood stage over the next
several days.

The Humboldt River at Comus is expected to reach action stage
later today. Additional rises are forecast with the river
reaching near flood stage in the Tuesday timeframe.
