Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
118 AM PDT Wed Apr 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...

Dry and warm spring weather continues with afternoon temperatures
rising into the 60s for Sierra communities and 70s for lower
valleys this week. Some valleys could see highs push above 80
degrees this weekend. A slight cooling trend with shower chances
may return next week.

.DISCUSSION...

* No notable changes to the forecast. There are no significant
weather makers showing up this week, this weekend and even the
start of next week. Looks mostly dry and warm with typical
  daytime winds.

* Weak/shallow front dropping south through the Great Basin today
will turn winds around to the north-northeast across western NV
with temperatures 2-4 degrees cooler compared to Tuesday
afternoon. West winds will be gusty across the Sierra ridges
this morning (40-50 mph) but these winds should back off this
afternoon/evening. The front is rather shallow and ridge winds
may only briefly shift to the east tonight and Thursday morning.
Otherwise, dry with occasional clouds making their way across
  the area through Thursday.

* Weak shortwave trough Friday may bring another increase in high
clouds, but precipitation chances remain very low per the latest
blended guidance (less than 10% chance). The GEFS meteogram
continues to indicate some light QPF along the Sierra, but
moisture and instability are rather meager. So our forecast
remains dry, along the lines of the drier ECS. A shortwave
ridge then builds for the weekend with temperatures warming
further. Looks like a decent shot of seeing 80 degrees for
warmer western NV valleys by Sunday.

* We will be watching another trough for mid-late next week as the
ECS/GEFS both show a general cooling along with a decent number
  of members showing QPF signatures.

.AVIATION...

* Overall VFR for the upcoming week. Patchy FZFG could return to
KTRK this morning (15-20% chance), but should be shallower with
more limited coverage and shorter duration compared to Tuesday
morning, as a weak weather system keeps things mixed up a bit
  more.

* FL100 winds 25-35 kts through this morning may result in some
light turbulence. Otherwise, surface winds will shift N-NE
across much of western NV today as a cold front drops southward
through the Great Basin. There may be a short duration for the
east slopes of the Sierra from KRNO-KMMH where surface winds
will start W-NW 10-15 kts this afternoon before shifting N-NE
this evening. Winds for Thursday look light all areas.
