Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
327 PM PDT Sat Jun 12 2021

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FOR SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
FROM MONDAY EVENING THROUGH LATE TUESDAY NIGHT FOR GUSTY NORTH WINDS,
LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND VERY HOT CONDITIONS...

...EXTENDED PERIOD OF HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS THROUGH NEXT WEEK WITH
ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS...

.DISCUSSION...
Warmer and drier today with diurnal winds expected in most areas
until sunset. A weak Sundowner will develop across the Santa Ynez
Range west of San Marcos Pass and Goleta this evening with gusts
35-45 mph expected. Humidities will remain above 35 percent in this
area overnight. Elsewhere it will remain dry with recoveries only
15-30 percent in the mountains and interior valleys. Patchy coastal
stratus and fog will develop through early Sunday.

Temperatures will continue to increase on Sunday as high pressure
over the Southwest expands westward into California. Onshore pressure
gradients will lead to locally gusty southwest winds 25-45 mph
through the highway 14 corridor to the Antelope Valley Sunday
afternoon. Gusty northwest to north winds will make a return to the
mountains and canyons of south Santa Barbara County Sunday evening
and night. Wind gusts will likely be in the 35-50 mph range from
Gaviota to the Montecito foothills.

The heat wave for next week remains on track, with an extended
period of hot and dry conditions Monday through next weekend with a
peak from Tuesday through Thursday. A few record high temperatures
will be possible with highs 103-113 and minimum humidities of 6-12
percent inland from the coast. Poor overnight recoveries of 15-25
percent will be likely in the foothills and mountains. Surface
pressure gradients increase Monday night through Wednesday morning
with moderate Sundowner wind gusts 45-55 mph expected across the
foothills and canyons below the Santa Ynez Mountains. Humidities will
hover in the lower 20s Monday night dropping into lower teens
Tuesday through Tuesday night for critical Red Flag conditions. Gusty
northwest to north winds 35-50 mph could also develop across the I-5
corridor to the foothills above Santa Clarita Monday night into
Tuesday for several hours of elevated fire weather. By Wednesday,
onshore flow should return with gusty winds over the interior
mountains and Antelope Valley, also a critical fire weather
potential. Widespread elevated to brief critical conditions are
expected due to the hot, dry, and areas of gusty winds. In addition,
interior areas will have a high risk for high mixing heights and
plume-driven fire growth from Wednesday through Friday.
