...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON FRIDAY TO 9 PM MDT

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON FRIDAY TO 9 PM MDT SUNDAY
FOR STRONG WINDS, LOW HUMIDITY AND SCATTERED DRY THUNDERSTORMS
FOR FIRE WEATHER ZONES 482, 483, 484, 489, 493, 494, 496, AND 498...

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM MDT SUNDAY STRONG
WINDS, LOW HUMIDITY AND SCATTERED DRY THUNDERSTORMS FOR FIRE
WEATHER ZONES 479, 480, 481, AND 488...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...An extended period of severe fire weather
conditions is expected Friday through this weekend across much
of Utah. Widely scattered dry lightning is expected Friday and
Saturday afternoon and evening across much of Utah. Gusty winds
and low humidities will hit critical thresholds for most of
the same locations Saturday through Tuesday, with the strongest
winds Tuesday.

.DISCUSSION...Multiple days of critical fire weather conditions are
in store across the state. A ridge of high pressure located near
the Great Basin will continue to gradually weaken through
Saturday. Moisture will continue to increase beneath the ridge,
and as a result thunderstorm coverage will also increase today,
with widely scattered thunderstorms expected to initiate mainly
along high terrain areas from southern Utah through the Unitas.
High resolution models also indicate the potential for shower and
thunderstorm activity to drift into western Utah late this
afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms will likely have difficulty
sustaining themselves after they move off of terrain, but
additional development is likely where outflow boundaries meet.
Thunderstorms will be mainly of the dry variety with perhaps one
or two wetter cores. Thunderstorms will produce strong, gusty
outflow winds. There is some potential for thunderstorm activity
to persist past 9PM MDT Friday evening, but the bulk of the
activity should have waned by this time. A sprinkles will then
linger through the night before shower and thunderstorm activity
once again redevelops around Noon Saturday for many of the same
areas. Thunderstorms actually appear to be drier on Saturday, so
widely scattered dry thunderstorms are again expected. This
activity is expected to diminish by sunset Saturday evening.

As the ridge breaks down on Sunday, dry northwesterly flow will
develop. While the threat for dry thunderstorms will end, gusty
west winds with low humidity will develop during the afternoon
from the Uinta basin south and west through the Kodachrome basin.
Similar conditions are expected for Monday. By late Monday and
especially into Tuesday, a trough of low pressure is expected to
develop off of the California coast. This will cause deep, strong
southwesterly flow to develop. Wind gusts in the 30-40 mph range
will be possible over a broad portion of the state -- and will be
combined with critically low relative humidity. Record dry fuels
and dry lightning followed by multiple days of wind and low
relative humidity is of obvious concern.

***Thunderstorms imply strong, gusty and erratic winds***
***All winds are 20 foot, 10-minute averages***
