514 FXUS62 KKEY 100236 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1036 PM EDT Thu May 9 2024 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 1030 PM EDT Thu May 9 2024 Currently - An Atlantic surface ridge stretches westward, weakly stretching across Florida and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This is resulting in light mostly southeasterly breezes across the Keys this evening. Meanwhile, a midlatitude trough is working its way eastward through the northeastern United States and adjacent Atlantic. This trough is helping to wash out the formerly sharp mid and upper level ridging across our area. That said, the local environment is rather unsupportive for convective activity. This evenings sounding indicated a very low level inhibitive layer based around 975 mb with quite a bit of dry air through the lower and mid levels. While surface dew points are in the lower 70s, precipitable water is only around 1.1 inches. Not only are showers absent from the forecast area, skies are almost entirely free of lower level clouds. Short Term Update - The previously mentioned surface ridge will be displaced further southeastward by trough swinging through the eastern United States. This along with diurnal effects will result in southeasterly breezes strengthening slightly as they shift further southerly. Moisture will continue to be lacking and inhibition will remain dominant. As a result, showers are not expected. Overnight lows will struggle to dip much below 80 and the veering flow will likely keep dew points in the mid 70s. && .MARINE... Issued at 1030 PM EDT Thu May 9 2024 A ridge across South Florida and the Keys will shift further southeastward tonight. This along with the usual diurnal effects that often accompany this pattern will result in winds strengthening slightly as they transition from southeast to southerly. No changes planned for the evening marine update. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 1030 PM EDT Thu May 9 2024 VFR conditions will prevail at the island terminals overnight. Surface winds will be light to gentle and steadily transition from southeasterly to southerly. && .KEY WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... FL...None.
