THE SUMMER MONTHS AT PORTLAND WERE CHARACTERIZED BY VERY WARM AND
HUMID CONDITIONS AND BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION. HOWEVER, THAT IS
NOT HOW SUMMER BEGAN AS THE LOW TEMPERATURE ON JUNE 1 WAS 37
DEGREES, THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE OBSERVED AT PORTLAND IN THE
MONTH OF JUNE SINCE 1967. WARMER AND MORE HUMID CONDITIONS
ARRIVED TOWARD THE MIDDLE OF JUNE. A PROLONGED STRETCH OF DRY
WEATHER BEGAN IN MID-MAY AND EXTENDED UNTIL THE LAST THREE DAYS
OF JUNE WHEN NEARLY 90% OF JUNE`S OBSERVED PRECIPITATION FELL.
MORE FREQUENT RAINFALL WAS OBSERVED FOR THE FIRST PART OF JULY TO
HELP EASE THE ONGOING DROUGHT BEFORE DRIER CONDITIONS RETURNED
FOR THE LATTER HALF OF THE MONTH. AFTER THE COOLEST INDEPENDENCE
DAY SINCE 1998, THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY BEGAN TO BUILD INTO THE
REGION AND PERSISTED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. IT MANIFESTED
PRIMARILY IN THE FORM OF WARM NIGHTTIME LOWS, INCLUDING A LOW OF
78 DEGREES ON JULY 27 WHICH IS THE WARMEST LOW TEMPERATURE ON
RECORD AT PORTLAND, AND THE FIRST STRETCH OF 3 STRAIGHT DAYS
ABOVE 90 DEGREES (JULY 26-28) SINCE JULY 2011. THE RESULT WAS
THAT JULY ENDED AS THE WARMEST OVERALL MONTH ON RECORD AT
PORTLAND. THE WARM AND HUMID CONDITIONS CONTINUED THROUGH THE
FIRST HALF OF AUGUST, INCLUDING ANOTHER STRETCH OF 3 STRAIGHT
DAYS ABOVE 90 DEGREES (AUGUST 11-13). A SERIES OF COLD FRONTS
FINALLY BROUGHT COOLER AND LESS HUMID CONDITIONS FOR THE LATTER
HALF OF AUGUST. HOWEVER, THE ONGOING DROUGHT CONDITIONS PERSISTED
AS AUGUST BECAME THE 4TH CONSECUTIVE MONTH WITH BELOW NORMAL
PRECIPITATION AT PORTLAND.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE SUMMER WAS 70.5 DEGREES WHICH WAS
3.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND BY FAR THE WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD.
UNTIL THIS YEAR, THE WARMEST SUMMER WAS 68.9 DEGREES IN 2018 AND
2016. THE COOLEST SUMMER WAS 63.7 DEGREES IN 1964, 1962, AND 1954.
THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE WARMEST SUMMERS ON RECORD AT PORTLAND.

ALTHOUGH THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE WAS 94, THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 13
DAYS THAT REACHED 90 OR HIGHER. THE WARMTH WAS EVEN MORE PRONOUNCED
IN NIGHTTIME LOWS AS THE TEMPERATURE DID NOT COOL AS MUCH IN THE
HUMID CONDITIONS. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE NUMBER OF 90 DEGREE
