AS OFTEN HAPPENS IN NEW ENGLAND, SPRING-LIKE WEATHER CONTINUED WELL
INTO JUNE. THE ACTIVE JET STREAM PATTERN THAT BROUGHT FREQUENT STORM
SYSTEMS THROUGH THE REGION CONTINUED TO BRING RENEWED RAINFALL EVERY
FEW DAYS. THE FREQUENT CLOUDS AND RAIN ALSO KEPT TEMPERATURES COOL.
THINGS BEGAN TO TURN AROUND IN LATE JUNE AND EARLY JULY WHEN WARM
AND HUMID AIR ARRIVED AND THE FREQUENT STORMINESS ENDED. PORTLAND
SAW 10 STRAIGHT DAYS AT 80 DEGREES OR WARMER AT THE BEGINNING OF
JULY. THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE IN THIS STRETCH WAS 91 DEGREES ON JULY
6. A RAINY DAY ON JULY 11 BROUGHT A BREAK FROM THE HEAT AS THE
TEMPERATURE DIDN`T GET OUT OF THE 60S. EVENTUALLY, THOUGH, THE HOT
AND HUMID WEATHER DID RETURN. THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE OF THIS WARM
STRETCH WAS 94 DEGREES ON JULY 21. A COLD FRONT BROUGHT SOME RAIN
AND COOLER TEMPERATURES FOR ABOUT A WEEK, BUT THE HEAT ARRIVED AGAIN
WITH ANOTHER 90 DEGREE DAY ON JULY 31. THE THREE PERIODS OF WARM
WEATHER ENDED UP COMBINING TO MAKE JULY 2019 THE WARMEST MONTH ON
RECORD AT PORTLAND. ALTHOUGH WARM WEATHER CONTINUED INTO AUGUST,
MOST OF THE AIR MASSES AFFECTING THE REGION CAME OUT OF CANADA WHICH
BROUGHT LESS HUMIDITY. JUST AS WARM AND HUMID WEATHER WOULD ARRIVE
ANOTHER COLD FRONT WOULD BRING A FEW SHOWERS AND A RETURN TO COOLER
AND DRIER CONDITIONS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL OF THE SUMMER
CAME ON AUGUST 21 WHEN A STALLED FRONTAL BOUNDARY LED TO NEARLY 2
INCHES OF RAIN FALLING. AFTER ABOUT A WEEK OF COOL WEATHER, A WARM
FRONT WITH TROPICAL MOISTURE FROM OFFSHORE TROPICAL STORM ERIN
BROUGHT ANOTHER ROUND OF HEAVIER RAINFALL ON THE NIGHT OF AUGUST 28
INTO THE MORNING OF THE MORNING OF AUGUST 29.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE SUMMER WAS 68.3 DEGREES WHICH WAS
1.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND TIED FOR THE 9TH WARMEST SUMMER ON
RECORD. THE WARMEST SUMMER WAS 68.9 DEGREES IN 2018 AND 2016. THE
COOLEST WAS 63.7 DEGREES IN 1964. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE
WARMEST SUMMERS AT PORTLAND.

WARMEST AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN SUMMER (SINCE 1941)...

1 68.9 2018

      68.5 1973
9     68.3  2019  <===

A TOTAL OF 12.85 INCHES OF RAIN FELL WHICH WAS 2.31 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL AND THE WETTEST SUMMER SINCE 2014. THE MOST FREQUENT
RAINFALL FELL IN JUNE, BUT THE HEAVIEST RAIN FELL IN AUGUST WITH
AUGUST 21 RECORDING THE MOST AT 1.91 INCHES. THE WETTEST SUMMER WAS
IN 2009 WHEN 22.31 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. THE DRIEST WAS IN 1999 WHEN
ONLY 4.10 INCHES WAS RECORDED.
