THE SUMMER OF 2019 AT SOUTH BEND HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 70.7
DEGREES, WHICH WAS 0.4 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 48TH
COLDEST ON RECORD.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE SEASON WAS 10.07 INCHES, 1.48 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 54TH DRIEST ON RECORD.

SUMMER BEGAN WITH A WET MONTH OF JUNE AND AN AVERAGE MONTHLY
TEMPERATURE BELOW NORMAL. TEMPERATURES WERE ON THE RISE TO END THE
MONTH, WITH A STRING OF DAYS WHERE HIGHS WERE IN THE MID-TO-UPPER
80S. THIS STRING CARRIED INTO JULY, INCLUDING JULY 2ND, WHEN THE
FIRST 90-DEGREE DAY WAS OBSERVED. A SECOND BOUT OF HEAT OCCURRED
FROM JULY 13TH THROUGH 21ST. DURING THIS STRETCH, FOUR MORE 90-
DEGREE DAYS WERE OBSERVED INCLUDING 93 DEGREES ON THE 20TH WHICH WAS
THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR SUMMER 2019. THERE WAS 6 DAYS WITH A
HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 90 DEGREES OR GREATER IN SUMMER 2019. THIS IS
HALF AS MANY DAYS AS THERE WERE IN 2018. THERE WERE ZERO 90-DEGREE
DAYS IN AUGUST.

PRECIPITATION WAS BELOW NORMAL FOR BOTH JULY AND AUGUST BY ABOUT 1
INCH.

BELOW IS A MONTH-BY-MONTH SUMMARY OF THE SUMMER.

JUNE

...WET WEATHER CONTINUES; SUMMER HEAT IN THE FLIP OF A SWITCH...

JUNE 2019 WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR CONTINUED SOAKING RAINFALL AND A
MID-MONTH STRETCH WHERE COOL TEMPERATURES MADE IT SEEM AS IF SUMMER
WOULD NEVER ARRIVE. THERE WERE FOUR DAYS WHERE RAINFALL GREATER THAN
A HALF INCH WAS RECORDED. FROM JUNE 10TH TO 24TH, THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW NORMAL (EXCEPTION: JUNE 19TH WHICH WAS 0.1
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL). THE COOLEST DEPARTURE WAS -13.6 DEGREES ON
JUNE 13TH. THE FINAL SIX DAYS OF THE MONTH FEATURED SUMMER-LIKE
TEMPERATURES WITH HIGHS IN THE 80S AND LOWS IN THE 60S. THE MINIMUM
TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 45 ON THE 3RD. THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE
OF THE MONTH WAS 87 ON THE 26TH.

JUNE 2019 RANKED AS TIED (1936, 1946, 2000) FOR THE 36TH COOLEST ON
RECORD WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 67.4 DEGREES, 1.8 DEGREES
BELOW NORMAL. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 87 REACHED ON THE 26TH,
28TH, AND 29TH, AND THE COLDEST WAS 45 ON THE 3RD. THERE WERE 16
DAYS DURING THE MONTH WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW
NORMAL WITH A PERIOD FROM THE 10TH TO THE 18TH OF CONSECUTIVE
DAYS OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES.

WHILE THE FORT WAYNE AREA WAS ABLE TO DRY OUT FROM HEAVY SPRING
RAIN, SOUTH BEND SAW ABOVE NORMAL RAIN FOR JUNE. THE PERIOD FROM MAY
1ST TO JUNE 30TH RANKS AS THE 11TH WETTEST ON RECORD WITH 12.17
INCHES OF PRECIPITATION. THIS EXCEEDS THE NORMAL VALUE FOR THAT
PERIOD, 7.62 INCHES.

TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR JUNE WAS 4.95 INCHES, 1.16 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS TIED (1946) FOR THE 29TH WETTEST JUNE ON
RECORD. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL WAS 0.93 INCHES ON THE 13TH.
MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION WAS RECORDED ON 14 DAYS OF THE MONTH.

JULY

...A NOTABLE BREAK IN PRECIPITATION; BOUTS OF HEAT...

THIS JULY WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR A STRETCH OF HOT AND HUMID DAYS MID
MONTH, BUT OVERALL, IT WAS A RATHER TYPICAL JULY. THERE WERE SIX
DAYS WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 90S, AND FOUR OF THESE OCCURRED
DURING THE VERY WARM PERIOD FROM JULY 13TH TO THE 20TH. DURING THIS
STRETCH, LOW TEMPERATURES DID NOT FALL BELOW 70 DEGREES FOR SEVEN
CONSECUTIVE DAYS. THIS WAS THE 6TH LONGEST JULY STREAK OF
CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH LOWS OF 70 DEGREES OR WARMER. THE LONGEST WAS
TEN DAYS IN A ROW ENDING ON JULY 23RD 1983. DESPITE THIS VERY WARM
PERIOD, THERE WERE PLENTY OF COMFORTABLE DAYS DURING THE MONTH.
THERE WERE 11 DAYS WITH LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE 50S AND TEN DAYS
WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES LESS THAN 85 DEGREES.

THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE FOR JULY 2019 WAS 74.9, 1.9 DEGREES
ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 28TH WARMEST JULY ON RECORD. THE
HOTTEST TEMPERATURE WAS 93 DEGREES ON THE 20TH AND THE COOLEST
TEMPERATURE WAS 53 DEGREES ON THE 23RD AND 31ST.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 3.03 INCHES, 0.97 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 61ST DRIEST JULY ON RECORD. THIS IS ONLY
THE SECOND TIME IN 2019 THAT SOUTH BEND HAS SEEN BELOW NORMAL
PRECIPITATION FOR A MONTH. THE LAST TIME WAS IN JANUARY 2019.

A NEW RECORD WARM MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 77 DEGREES WAS SET ON THE
19TH. THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 76 DEGREES IN 2013.

AUGUST

...DRY WITH EPISODES OF BELOW-NORMAL TEMPERATURES...

EIGHT OF THE FIRST TEN AUGUST DAYS SAW AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE BELOW
NORMAL. INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, OUR MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH
WAS OBSERVED WITHIN THIS STRETCH; 88 DEGREES ON AUGUST 5TH. THE
MONTH ENDED WITH HIGHS IN THE 70S FOR EIGHT OF THE LAST TEN DAYS.

THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 70.0, 1.3 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.
THIS RANKED AS THE 34TH COLDEST AUGUST ON RECORD. THE MAXIMUM
TEMPERATURE WAS 88 DEGREES ON THE 5TH AND THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE
WAS 49 DEGREES ON THE 31ST.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 2.09 INCHES, 1.67 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 29TH DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD.
PRECIPITATION OF 0.01 INCHES OR MORE WAS OBSERVED ON 10 DAYS, WITH
THE GREATEST SINGLE-DAY AMOUNT OF 0.88 INCHES ON THE 6TH.
